I've noticed that display reposnse is very laggy in guest OS. It is impossible to writing code in Visuial Studio in guest OS by these lags in display.

I'm using Windows 7 RTM x64 with Virtual PC RC with ATI graphic card. I've test in on Windpows 2003 as guest OS and Windows XP SP 3 as guest OS. The same result.

I've uninstalled Virtual PC RC currently and I use old VPC 2007 SP1 and everything works smoothely.

What are your system specs?  Which ATi card?

I am experiencing the same problem on my HP notebook 8510p with 4 GB of RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphic card built-in. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit as the host OS. The guest OS is Windows XP SP3 with 512 MB of RAM. The same configuration works brilliant on my desktop PC with 8 GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.

I wonder if this may have to do with the default graphic card driver that Windows 7 Prof. installed when I setup the new OS on the notebook?!? The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphic driver version is 8.632.1.2000 as of 17th August 2009. On the HP support page I can only find drivers for Windows Vista 64bit (see also here ). But they are slightly younger with a release date of 14th September 2009. Can I try these Vista 64bit driver instead?

Thanks for a short answer in advance.

    Salut,
      Mathias

Does ATi have newer drivers direct from their site?

Does ATi have newer drivers direct from their site?
    Hello smjain,

Thanks for your reply. I have installed the ATI Catalyst™ 9.10 Driver for Windows 7 (64 bit) from the AMD website (see also here ). The Control Panel now lists as an installed program the ATI Catalyst Install Manager. But when I ask for the driver version of the display adapter in the Windows 7 Device Manager is still says the Driver Date would be 17th August 2009 with a Driver Version of 8.632.1.2000. I then checked the dates of the driver files in C:\Windows\system32 and they too have a date of 18th August 2009. I then tried to install them manually pointing the the new ATI folder under Program Files but the Device Manager says "The best driver software for your device is already installed".

Originally the problem surfaces in the Embarcadero Delphi IDE inside a Virtual PC. But I have now loaded a plain Windows XP SP3 Virtual PC and opened a bigger MS Word file with WordPad. As soon as I try to mark sections of the document with CTRL-Shift-Arrow Forward or with the mouse it may take up to 2-3 seconds for that part of the document to be repainted with a blue background and white text colour. During that process the CPU usage inside the Virtual PC goes up to nearly 100% with most of the usage being generated by the process vmsrvc.exe (up to 50% for this process alone).

Could it be that the Virtualization Technology feature in the BIOS of the notebook needs an update? The HP ROM BIOS version is F.15 as of 12th February 2008.

Anyone else "listening" here in the forum, who had a similar problem and solved it?

Thanks for a short answer in advance.

    Hello Folks!

Here are some further observations to the above problem:

When I load the plain Windows XP Virtual PC and just look at the Task Manager the task manager may take up to 50% of the CPU usage. Especially if I ask to resort the process list by CPU usage. I don't have to use any other software (e.g. WordPad). Just by keeping the Task Manager busy to show teh processes with the most CPU usage first the entire CPU usage rarely sink below 50%. Also moving the Task Manager Window around on the desktop comes with a noticeable delay and CPU usage goes up to 85-95%.

In the Integration Features I have only enabled Audio and the Clipboard. But even if I disable all Integration Features the Task Manager allown can keep the Virtual PC extremly busy (e.g. 70-85%). Also mouse moves on the desktop will cause the CPU usage to go to 100% rock solid. At the same time the host OS isn't showing any noticeably CPU usage due to its guest OS "sweating a lot".

Any ideas what might be wrong with my notebook or Windows Virtual PC installation?

Thanks for a short answer in advance.

What version of the integration components are you using?
Are you sure the XP you are using is SP3?

    Hello Proton2,

    Thanks for your reply.

In the meanwhile I have disabled Windows Virtual PC, disabled the Virtualization Technology in the BIOS, installed Virtual PC 2007 & Virtual PC 2007 SP1 and all is back to normal on the notebook. The graphic display works just fine. As soon as I enable the Virtualization Technology in the BIOS again and start a Virtual PC 2007 Plain Windows XP machine I get a blue screen of death. I am afraid that the implementation of the Virtualization Technology in the BIOS by HP is "sub-optimal".

The notebook has another 10 months of warranty to go and then it is due to be replaced with then 3 years of usage. I may log a support case with HP and report back here in the forum.

Thanks again Proton2 & smjain for your suggestions.

    Hello Folks!

I logged a support case with HP support. Testing of the virtualization feature of Windows 7 under this older notebook model (HP 8510p) is still an outstanding task. For the moment I am going to stick with Virtual PC 2007 without Virtualization Technology in the BIOS enabled. I hope that HP can make use of my findings and that it may result in a BIOS upgrade being made available rather earlier than later.

Any further news will be posted here. ;-)
