Hi, I hope someone can help me? My problem relates to Windows Virtual PC: I select Virtual Windows XP setup wizard from the Start menu, and follow the prompts entering the required information. The wizard returns the error "The file could not be written" then followed by the message "irtual hard disk could not be attached to virtual machine. Please check values and try again" I am at a loss to figure out why it is doing this? I am running Windows 7 RC x64 Thanks in advance! Mick
It seems there are issues with the permissions on the default folders. Do you get the same error when you try to create a VM with default values? If yes, please check the permissions on the default folders and make sure that you have write permissions for the same. "This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hi, I thought that it was permissions myself! I was able to create a VM with the default values and boot the VM. The errors I am receiving for the Virtual Windows XP setup wizard results in the program forcing me to create the VM manually. When I try to start this VM it produces the error message " The file could not be written" and fails to start. I checked the VM's VHD file and it was set to read only and it was approximately 330KB in size. When I remove the readonly from the VHD the VM boots but it has no OS pre configured which is what the Virtual Windows XP setup wizard is suppose to create!
The Virtual Windows XP VHD is approx 1GB in size and according to documentation it is copied from the C:\Program Files\Virtual Windows XP\ folder to a default location in USer's profile folder for each logged user who creates the Virtual Windows XP enviroment. From what I have been able to determine The Virtual Windows XP setup wizard seems to have file access permission issues? Any further light that can be shed on this would be helpful?
If you want manually creating the VM and if you want to have pre-configured XP OS in the same, please create a differencing disk from pre-configured XP VHD placed in (C:\Program Files\Virtual Windows XP) and attach the differencing disk to the VM.

Can you disable the anti-virus and see? Are you also using kaspersky?"This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. You assume all risk for your use."
Hi, I will try you suggestion thanks! I am using Kaspersky Anti-Virus 8.0 Technical Preview for Windows 7. I will also check out the thread you mentioned.
Hi, I disabled Kaspersky and the Virtual Windows XP setup wizard completed without any errors and proceeded launching the VM. (I have already had some issues with Kaspersky running on x64 version of Win 7.... I will have to look at a different AV package!! :-)..)
The issue has been resolved!
Thanks
