    Hi there,
I would like to install Virtual PC (not XP mode) onto Win7 64bit. I tried to install Virtual PC 2007 on the Win7 box but it said it was not compatible.

What version of Virtual PC do I need?

    Thanks,
    Steve.

The page is for XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC.

After you choose Windows 7 64bit and English, click Windows Virtual PC button will help get a 64bit Windows Virtual PC.

    like this:

    Download and install this second:

    Windows Virtual PC

XP Mode is just a preconfigured virtual machine, it is not a VM application.  It requires Windows VPC or VPC2007, or another VM application to run.

Windows VPC will allow you to install other OSes, see: http://www.essjae.com/virtualization/wwadw.htm  This is a short list I've started compiling.

VPC2007 will run on Windows 7, but its not one of Microsoft's supported configurations.

Ok, while there are 2 installers for VPC2007, one for 32bit and one forfor 64bit, the actual application is always 32bit.  When you install the 64bit version of VPC2007 you're getting 64bit drivers and a 32bit application.  VPC2007 should install in the x86 folder.

If your computer supports hardware virtualization, use Windows Virtual PC which was designed to run on Win 7.

If you don't have hardware virtualization you can run VPC 2007. The only thing I know of which prevents intalling VPC 2007 is having WVPC already installed. Check Progams and Features to see if this is the case.

    Hi Steve,

Why not using Windows Virtual PC for the Windows 7 system?

There is a 64bit Windows Virtual PC which should able to be installed. Here is the link.

Note: 64bit Windows Virtual PC means it can be installed on a 64bit host system, but not mean it will support 64bit guest system.

    Hi,

That link Shaon supplied is for XP Mode. This is not what I want. I want to be able to install other operating systems as well. XP Mode will only install XP as far as I'm aware.

The pages I've found for Virtual PC don't say anything about Windows 7 or Windows 7 64bit, they only mention Vista.

Bill's answer was right but only halfway. When I get to the installation (after having removed XP Mode, and associated update) I see the path for Virtual PC 2007 SP1 to be "C:\Program Files (x86)\..." wouldn't this indicate that the installation is not 64bit?

    Thanks,
    Steve.

The link http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx allows you to download both windows xp mode and windows virtual pc. Just select your machine SKu and bit information and the language you require, you can find 2 download buttons (for xp mode and windows virtual pc), if you don't want xp mode, just download the windows virtual pc.

If you have installed XP mode, you also need windows virtual pc to run XP mode. You can be rest assured if your XP mode is running, you also have the software bits to create your own vms and install any 32 bit OS on it.

Virtual PC, i.e Virtual PC 2007, is supported on vista, but you can run it on windows 7 as well with minor glitches i guess. VPC2007 is a 32 bit app hence it installs in "C:\Program Files (x86)\..." , but the installation carries 64 bit drivers.
