External HDMI Audio doesn't play until computer restarted

I performed an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 on a Sony VAIO laptop with an HDMI out. In Windows 7, I could freely plug my HDMI cable in and out and get both the video and audio playing on an external TV. In Windows 8, I plug the HDMI cable in and get the video. However, the audio will not play on the external device unless the HDMI cable is plugged in while the computer boots up; so, I am forced to restart the computer with the cable plugged in in order to get sound to play on my TV. To say it another way, the external sound device doesn't show up in Control Panel -> Sound unless the HDMI is plugged in during the boot process.
I've tried multiple TV's and nothing else has changed other than the OS. Has anyone else had this issue?
