Video Driver update fails with status 0xe0e00104

Running Windows 8 Release Preview 64 Bit (Build 8400)
I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT video card with driver version 9.18.12.9665 (4/22/2012) installed.
I had another issue that suggested I update my video drivers. I tried installing both the WHQL 302.82 (2012.06.27) and the beta 304.79 (2012.07.03) drivers downloaded directly from NVIDIA. With and without a "Clean install" (deleting the old NVIDIA settings).
Both go all the way through the install process and then say:
Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
When I view the sytem event log I see the following information event:
Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-UserPnp
Event ID: 20001
Task Category: (7005)
Level: Information
User: SYSTEM
Description:
Driver Management concluded the process to install driver nv_disp.inf_amd64_25ce518c7bca42ee\nv_disp.inf for Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0622&SUBSYS_16901462&REV_A1\4&13D7CD30&0&0008 with the following status: 0xE0E00104.The Device Instance ID is that of the NVIDIA video card. Searching for 0xE0E00104 returns no other results..
I tried installing it manually and with the installer. Also tried switching to the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" first, but I am still not able to install the updated drivers.
I also turned off driver signature enforcement as a last resort. Didn't help (so I turned it back on).
Interestingly I have the same issue when trying to switch back to the drivers that were installed by default.

NVIDIA driver 304.79 beta was just released for Vista, 7 and 8
Goto GeForce.com
If the driver is not working, reintall it and use a clean install option

Thursday, July 05, 2012 5:25 PMI did the clean install option. Sorry I wasn't more specific in my question - Edited question to include that. Same result.

Remove the NVIDIA driver then and reboot and then install it fresh and see if that works any better

The diver doesn't show up under Uninstall a Program and I did right click on the driver in Device manager and select Uninstall and then told it to "Delete the drive software for this device." Then I rebooted, and tried installing the drivers. Same result.
I've done all the traditional driver troubleshooting I can think of. Any idea what the status 0xe0e00104 means? Or maybe some none traditional driver troubleshooting?

Most likely then you may need to install Windows clean then.

The code has 3 meanings:
err 0xe0e00104 # as an HRESULT: Severity: FAILURE (1), Facility: 0xe0, Code 0x104 # for hex 0x104 / decimal 260 : MMIOERR_CANNOTCLOSE mmsystem.h STATUS_REPARSE ntstatus.h # A reparse should be performed by the Object Manager since # the name of the file resulted in a symbolic link. SQL_260_severity_16 sql_err # Disallowed implicit conversion from data type %ls to data # type %ls, table '%.*ls', column '%.*ls'. Use the CONVERT # function to run this query. # 3 matches found for "0xe0e00104"
Looks like you get a symbolic link issue.
Which other issue do you have which let you tried to install a newer driver?

On the face of it, its easier to simply wipe the HD and start over.
Faster than trying to fix this mess.

Saturday, July 07, 2012 1:22 AMJust a thought, one thing I never seen mentioned here.. Try disabling UAC. You tried driver signature, the default drivers won't install either. How did you try reverting back to the original drivers? Driver installation program or "roll back driver" button in device manager?

Good idea, so I tried both of those. Same result.

Minecraft said my drivers were not supported and that I needed to update.
Looks like you get a symbolic link issue.
I've had errors installing or updating other software about not having permissions to write to a file or directory. I would just update the permissions on the folders in question and that fixed it. Haven't had that error recently.
It is nice to know what the error means. Any other suggestions on repairing the symbolic link?

Yeah, but that doesn't help find the bug or know I won't have this same problem next time. Wiping the HD and starting over always works, but so does wiping the HD and going back to Windows 7 or even switching to another OS entirely.- Edited by JimMcKeeth Monday, July 09, 2012 7:12 PM

Look 8 is still under development, so expect a few kinks
its faster and easier to backup and start over, I am aware that NVIDIA is now finally coughing up with vista, 7 and 8 drivers in the package so I suspect it is now slowly getting better for 8

I totally get that this is a beta OS, but thought it would be good if I could debug the issue and possibly file a bug report so it gets fixed in the released OS. Running a beta and then abandoning the beta whenever I run into problems doesn't improve the released product any.
Are you saying you think it is an issue with the NVIDIA drivers?

Hard to tell about NVIDIA of late as their forum has been down for over a week now.
The latest beta driver seems to be OK with the games I currently down.

I found the following errors in the {_SCAN_FILE_QUEUE}
! sig: VerifyTrustFailed for C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Drs\dbInstaller.exe.
! sig: Error 0x800b0109: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider. That same error occurs on multiple files.
Then in the {_commit_file_queue} there are more errors:
flq: DeleteFile: 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\nvarch.sys'
! flq: DeleteFile: FAILED!
! flq: Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.Which repeats for multiple files.
And finally there is one last interesting error:
dvi: {DIF_INSTALLDEVICE} 12:20:53.248 dvi: CoInstaller 1: Enter 12:20:53.249 dvi: CoInstaller 1: Exit dvi: CoInstaller 2: Enter 12:20:53.251 inf: Opened PNF: 'C:\WINDOWS\INF\oem28.inf' ([strings]) !!! dvi: CoInstaller 2: failed(0xe0e00104)!So it looks like it is a trust issue. I already tried turning off the driver signature enforcement, but that looks like it may the cause. I checked the security on the files in question and they appear to have valid signatures by a trusted authority. . . .

You can use pnputil.exe to remove this driver:
pnputil.exe -d oem28.inf
Reboot and try to install the driver again."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code"

So I was thinking that since the error is reporting it doesn't trust the root certificate I tried re-installing the root certificate. That didn't help. I turned off driver signature enforcement, putting the system back in "test mode", and repeated the steps (with UAC off). Still got the same errors.
NVIDIA's forums are still down as it looks like they were hacked. Despite all that I am learning, I suspect I am getting closer to a reinstall.

I suggest backup with 2 copies in case the unthinkable happens before your wipe the disk and reinstall
best bet is to have a couple of USB disks for backups

I met the same error.
I take these steps to fix the error.- If "C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\Drs" folder exist on your computer, you delete "C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\Drs" folder.
(on delete, you need to take ownerships and grant yourself full permission to delete the file or folder.) - install graphic drivers.
