Answered IDE Drive - not enough space

I have an ASUS P5K-E Motherboard with Sata and IDE ports.  I run my Windows 7 system on the SATA.  I have a spare 300GB IDE drive that I hooked-up to one of the IDE ports.  When I start Windows 8 from DVD and try to FORMAT/Partition/Use the spare drive, it tells me that there's not enough space.   But there's no option to Partition it.  I had to do it from Windows 7.  So what gives?

During the installation, on the screen where you select where you want to
install, there's an Advanced option. Selecting that option will allow you
to delete, create, and format partitions.

many internal hard disks contain jumper pins that you must set to designate a hard disk as a primary (master) disk where you install Windows or as a secondary (subordinate) disk where you store programs and files. These jumpers are small plastic sleeves that you must place on the correct metal jumper pins. For additional instructions, check the information that came with the internal hard disk. <http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-or-remove-a-hard-disk-drive>

There is no requirement that the Windows OS files be installed on a master
drive nor that programs and data be installed on a slave.

Thanks Paul, I held the belief that an OS is installed on the primary drive.

With all due respect Paul, the above link from no other than Microsoft, clearly states 'that you must set to designate a hard disk as a primary (master) disk where you install Windows or as a secondary (subordinate) disk where you store programs and files. Can you please explain the dichotomy, it's their word versus yours. Or am I mistaken somewhere ?

The article is simply wrong. Notice that it also states that laptops can
only contain a single hard disk, also wrong.

    Hi documan--

Reading this thread  makes me want to ask you, how much space is allocated on your drives by typing diskmgmt.msc into the run box evoked by hitting the Win key + R?

More importantly, is this 300 GB IDE drive an external HD? Because if it is, you aren't going to be able to install Win 8 to the external drive or it's partition.

One option for you is to run Win 8 from a live USB Flash Drive:

Sorry but this simply is not true. Drive 1 (ignore the label on the drive), Drive 2, and Drive 3 are all external drives and all are valid install targets:

    Hi again Paul,

if you are not talking about Windows 8 To Go, please give us a link. Have been reading all along that DP/CP shouldn't be installed on external drives since most are still connected by USB 2.0 which will make the system too slow, but that's probably just one of the reasons.

A link for what exactly? The statement was made that one can't install
Windows 8 to an external drive. My post was simply pointing out that was
wrong, I made no reference at all to performance. It should be obvious from
the screen shot that I"m not referring to Windows 8 To Go.

And why would I provide such a link. I've already explained why I responded
the way I did and it had nothing at all to do with performance.

    Paul--

Good info and thanks for the screenshot.  My experience when I tried to install on two external USB Seagate Expansions plugged into two boxes several times was that I got bounced each time with an error message that said close to "you cannot install on the external HD because there is no IDE controller setting in the bios." I based my assertion on that, and can't tell you why I couldn 't do it and you could.  Once I formatted a partition on my internal HDs, I had no trouble installing Win 8 to that partition on either box.

    Best,

    Win8to10

I have a 750 gig SATA drive that I just formatted and it says not enough space. I reformatted it within the setup and it still says not enough space.

I tried selecting my other SATA drives which each had over 100 gigs free and got the same  not enough space message.

    Any ideas?

Is this dual boot situation? Extend the existing system reserved partition.

    Paul-

With all respect due the situation on installing Windows 8 or Windows 7 and probably Vista is not as sinple as you characterized it.

I have always been aware that the web is teeming with screenshots and videos of installs to a partitioned USB connected external HD, however, not every box can accomplish this.

I partitioned a Seagate expansion that was connected to an Acer Iconia 500 W tab, and put the same DVD I used for several easy Win 8 CP installations on other boxes onto the DVD drive.

Last night I attempted to again install Win 8 CP using the same DVD I used to install on my other boxes onto a Seagate Expansion USB external HD that was partitioned with 40 GB.  While I know you screenshot the installation above, I had a very different result.  I properly put the DVD-ROM device, an new LG DVD burner in the # 1 position in the bios first, and of course promptly received the message from a MSFT team at Redmond Washington that "you cannot install Windows 8 onto your USB connected external hard drive." The partition was 40 GB, plenty of space on which to install Vista, Win7 or Win 8 CP, RC, and RTM when it comes.

For whatever reason, some people may be able to install Win 8 onto a USB connected external HD and some people can't.  One reason often given by a number of people I talked with who work on HDs day and day out is that there is no IDE controller for the external HD on the MOBO. I would have screenshot the error message for you, but my phone was resetting at the time. I would be happy to repeat the install and screenshot it for you if you like.

    Best,
