2008 R2 Server restore fails if the drive controller changes
-
Wednesday, December 02, 2009 3:31 PMThis was a test/upgrade combination - I'm upgrading the drives on my test server to a RAID 0 stripe from a single SATA drive - like what might happen if you experienced a system board failure and had to restore to a new machine.
I have a complete backup (system sata, bare metal recovery and data/programs) of my test domain controller. I've wiped the drives, set up a RAID 0 stripe, set up a second RAID 0 stripe for VM's etc., and was able to run a complete restore from the boot CD (including installing the required RAID drivers). The system restored, booted up, found the new hardware (RAID), then required a re-start. After that, it fails to start, puts you into repair mode, and says it can't find the disks.
In trying to wipe everything completey, it now says it can't load the drivers for the RAID at all. These are the same drivers it loaded previously that worked.
Any input on changing the drive contoller so the system can start?

Full Sysytem Recovery (BMR:Bare Metal Recovery) is supported on similar hardware only. In case of new hardware ASR BMR recovery is done in which all partition is overlayed on the new disk.
Since in your case you are changing the storage mechanism I suggest you to create the partitions/volumes on the new device manually and do the volume level recovery from the backup using backup CLI.
You can check the command syntax using the following command "wbadmin start recovery /?". Internet help is available @ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770340%28WS.10%29.aspx

Friday, December 11, 2009 3:25 AMI did get this to finally work, but it took 7 or 8 tries. Once it did work, it worked very well. It turned out to be an incompatibility with one of the on-board RAID controllers. Once I got that sorted out, the rest all worked as expected.
Overall, it's a very good restore but there is still room for improvement. -

I solved problem. I use the following link : http://www.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31980
You have to change only and i mean only :
10) Change Intelide/Start from 4 to 0
11) Change Pcide/Start from 0 to 3
Nothing else, if you change anything else, it will not work, that is a bummer. Why it is not written at any SCDMP manual or KB, I do not know, I `m not the only one with these error.
