Enrolling Windows Phone 8 failed: "we weren't able to set up this company account on your phone"

In order to manage my mobile devices by Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 I registered a Windows Intune subscription and configured the Windows Intune connector. Furthermore I synchronized my on-premise users with Windows Intune and enrolled both a Windows 8 and a Windows RT device to a test user. However I'm not able to enroll a Windows Phone 8 to the same test user.

Under Settings\Company Apps I tried to add my Windows Phone 8 device (Nokia 820) and added manually the server address "enterpriseenrollment-s.manage.microsoft.com" as I've not a registered domain. If I put in a wrong URL I'm notified to check my internet connection and when put in wrong credentials I'm prompted to verify the information entered is correct.

I'm almost sure it's caused by the fact I haven't enabled Windows Phone 8 platform in Configuration Manager console. Is it possible to use a "demo certificate" or manually create a code-signing certificate instead of buying a Windows Phone 8 code signing certificate of $299

    Hi Ronny,

    1.  Your user that you are trying to enroll with need to be in the Windows Intune User Group in the Account Portal (account.manage.microsoft.com)

    2.  You need a signed SSP uploaded in CM

We are working on a process that would provide a trial SSP for customers who want to test Windows 8 Phone with Intune/CM but that process is not ready yet.

    Thanks,

    Jon L. - MSFT

    Hi Jon,

Thank you for your response. The user is member of the Windows Intune User Group. Can you provide an estimate when we can expect a trail SSP? I've setup this configuration indeed for demo purpose. Does it make sense to contact a local PAM/TAM or the Windows Intune product team?

    Regards,

    Ronny

    Hi Ronny,

I would stay in contact with your TAM or keep an eye on the forums.  I don't have an ETA right now, but as soon as it's ready we'll make sure to post an announcement up here.

    Thanks,

    Jon

    Hi John,

To get back to your answer/explanation, it assumes you must first install a mobile code-signing certificate before you can manage (enroll) your Windows Phone 8 devices. But from what I understand from this whitepaper Managing Windows Phone 8 with Windows Intune this is not the case. I'm therefore wonder, before I purchase a cert, if this is caused by something else. We use the *. onmicrosoft.com domain and have therefore no DNS entries defined enabling automatic detection and provided the Windows Intune service manually (enterpriseenrollemnt-s.manage.microsoft.com). Correct me if I'm wrong but enrolling a Windows Phone 8 device should be done in the same way as a Window RT, isn't?

    Regards,

    Ronny

    Hi Jon,

Please forget my last reply, today we added the code signing certificate and were able to successfully enroll Windows Phone 8 devices, so I was wrong. In order to buy this certificate we had to subscribe a Windows Phone Dev Account as well.

    Windows Phone Dev Subscription: https://dev.windowsphone.com/en-us/join

Code Signing Certificate Request page: https://products.websecurity.symantec.com/orders/enrollment/microsoftCert.do
