Need Windows Update cache server
Need Windows Update cache server
- Instead of WSUS, where you download all kinds of things you don't need, or just plain wast your time managing
Is there a Windows update server cache, i can use instead
1. point all computers to one computer
2. if the update does not exist it is downloaded from Microsoft else use the cached file
3. if a new update the supersedes one or more cached updates, the cached ones are deleted
4. requires no management
5. Does not chew up my limited bandwidth

- Hi David,
I suggest you only download the update for related products in your environment which can save time and disk space.
Also, the old updates cannot be approved if the new version has been synchronized, using Auto approval can save your time for management. - I only want to cache it if a computer asks for it.
its not about saving disk space I have terabytes out the ying yang.
its about the limitations ISP's put on us in Australia, its a download limitation.
thus if I use WSUS, management time is so high, and not to mention none of the computers have the same hardware and software.
The entire updates for 5 different OS's is a lot of download not to mention several different versions of MS Office etc. especially since most of those updates are not needed. And driver updates in WSUS, is a nightmare. - From casual observations, ISA server with HTTP caching enabled seems to behave as you describe. You have to tell the clients to use it as a HTTP Proxy though. ISA 2006 ships with a cache rule for Microsoft update.
- Using a proxy server, is not an option, the computers connect to more than one network
- Configure your WSUS correctly to only download the updates required by your clients. Once it's done (it's as you've noticed time consuming) it'll only download what's needed. Personally I only run critical patches through WSUS for Windows + Office, the rest is done on deployment of the standard image.
