Managing Windows Firewall with Powershell

Hi.

I would like to manage Windows Firewall in GPOs with Powershell.

I know about the hnetcfg.fwpolicy2 and hnetcfg.fwmgr COM-objects, but those will only let me manage local firewalls.

Is it possible to administer WF in GPOs with Powershell? And if so, how?

remote management fails to connect

2 newly built W2k8 R2 servers, same domain. Windows Firewall is disabled on both.
Via Server Manager, I cannot connect from one server to the other.
I enabled 'Allow automatic configuration of listeners' on both servers
I also ran 'winrm quickconfig' on both
Windows remote mgmt service is started and set to Automatic on both
I still get the error "the client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request"
I am logged into the originating server as the domain admin, so it is not a permissions issue.
What am I missing?

Making Server 2008 SBS play nice with APC Powerchute

I've got two servers in two different offices. They're both running Server 2008 SBS 64 bit, set up within a couple weeks of each other. Each one is connected to an APC UPS via a USB cable.

Server 1 has a problem where Windows' power management tries to shut down the server during a power outage, interfering with Powerchute. Server 2 has no such problem. Server 2's copy of Windows doesn't seem to see the UPS, and lets Powerchute handle it.

Server 1 has "HID UPS Battery" and "American Power Conversion USB UPS" in the Device Manager, Server 2 does not.

Server 1 has "On Battery" options in the Windows power management settings, server 2 does not.

I have no idea why Server 2 works the way I want it, and Server 1 doesn't. I've been over this with APC's tech support, and they've pretty much given up on me. Anyone have an idea?

How do you send email from a Windows Server 2008 R2 ALERT data collector?

I have configured a custom data collector on my Windows Server 2008 R2 server to alert on a performance counter threshold. The alert itself is working great - I can see the alert getting loggedd in the Event Viewer. I want to fire an email when the alert is triggered. I can see that I can add a task to the alert - how do you email using this functionality? Guidance is appreciated.

Not able to install a KMS on a 2008 R2 machine

I'm trying to install a KMS Server on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine, but no matter I'm trying I always get the error message

Not enough storage is available to process this command

It doesn't work even if I install SP2 at first. Ever the same error message.

Can anybody help me how to fix this???

System State backup error due to sector size?

When trying to do a bakcup of the system state I got the error "The sector size of the physical disk on which the virtual disk resides is not supported." Any suggestions on a work around or fix?

Hello,
Domain member server with fresh install of Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with Hyper V role enabled start to get event id 10154 warnings.
The domain is Windows 2000.
It's any way to permanently (KB, patch..) to solve that issue (bug)?

The WinRM service failed to create the following SPNs: WSMAN/Server.ena.com; WSMAN/Server.
Additional Data
The error received was 8235: %%8235.
User Action
The SPNs can be created by an administrator using setspn.exe utility.

Task Manager error - the task image is corrupt or has been tampered

I configured a task on my Windows Server 2008 DC which includes a script to run and send out the success/failure of the task on an email address, the task works fine for couple of days but suddenly from last 2 days if I open a task manager console on my DC it throws an error saying " the task image is corrupt or has been tampered .<task name which I configured>, I tried finding that task so that i can delete it but couldn’t able to find in the console.

Can someone please help me out with the issue here as this is a DC which is very critical to our environment.

I have a nice, challenging problem with installing some features on my Server 2008 R2:

With some features (e.g. Connection Manager Administration Kit) I get 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation.

I found out, that the directory "C:\Program Files\CMAK" does not exist, so I wonder, if the directory "C:\Program Files\CMAK\Support" should be created.

When I create "C:\Program Files\CMAK", this steps seems to work and the installer struggles when trying to create "C:\Program Files\CMAK\Support\quarchk.cmd" - hmmm - while I was writing this lines I was wondering how that can be? It seems that the creation of "C:\Program Files\CMAK\Support" worked - so why do we have problems with creating "quarchk.cmd"?

I thought about a threading/race condition issue, because I had similar problems years ago when installing a beta of SQL 2008 where it helped to set process affinity to the TrustedInstaller Service, but this didn't help in this situation.

* My second idea was - "forefront" - so I uninstalled forefront - no change
* Switched of Windows Search - no change

Any ideas?

Unable to modify Password policies?

Using Server 08 R2, I am trying to modify my domain password policy from it's default. I've tried following the basics here:

but with no luck at all. I get to Local sercurity> account policies> password policy and then I can browse each of the policy's values. I cannot edit any of the values though, they are all greyed out. I am logged in as administrator.

Strange Powershell AD Module Behaviour

I've been trying to write a short Powershell script to check for orphaned home drives and found that it was returning way too many results.

The basic syntax is

Get-ADUser -Filter { HomeDirectory -eq "\\path\$username" }

It appears that every account with a CN starting with 0 through 9 and A through F returns null, whereas everything account with a CN starting with G through Z returns a result (where there's a match).

The weirdest thing is that even if I use something like

$user = Get-ADUser "bob"

Get-ADUser -Filter { HomeDirectory -eq $user.homedirectory }

Where "bob" is a user with a homedirectory set, it still returns null, even though $user.homedirectory contains the correct homedirectory value as read out of the user account .

Any ideas?

Unable to run Defrag with domain admin account on 2008 R2

When I try to run defrag on my 2008 r2 file sever from command line it comes back with "the disk defragmenter cannot start because you have insufficent priveleges to perform this operation. (0x89000024)". I am in the local admin group on the server with my domin user ID which has both domain admin and enterprise admin rights on my domain. This is a member server of my domain. Has anyone had this problem or does anyone know a fix for this? I am running this in a RDP session not sure if that makes a difference or not and the drive that I am doing the defrag onis a SAN drive. One last thing when I do a run as admin on the command line it will run but not as my account just the local admin account.

Powershell and the Security Event log

I'm new to powershell and would like to find a solution to what I'm trying to do with powershell on Server 2008.

When I run
get-eventlog security | where {$_.Message -like ' *SomeUserName*' -and $_.EventID -match "4624"} | export-csv the Message column is just that, one big bloody mess to deal with. Not only would I like the traditional columns it creates I would also like to have the Message field part of the CSV so that columns like user account name appears, Ip address of where the event was located (all those nifty items found in the Message column)

Ideas?

Very strange log issues on Windows 2008 R2 Standard version

I have two issues regarding logs.

The first one is for evenviewer. I have about 3M security records so I think it is better to dump it and clear it every day. So I opened eventviewer, then open secuirty log, right click and select Clear Logs... Then I click Save and Clear button. I did get a pop up window asking me where I want to save the logs.
Then almost rightway, I found all events are cleared in the eventviewer. I checked the dump file and found even the file got created but only few records were saved. Meantime, I found there is a small icon showing in the system tray looks like evenview. I put mouse on it and it says Event Viewer: Saving events.... But the dump file does not get bigger and bigger. Actually I leave it run for the whole weekend and one Monday when I check the dump file, it is still the same, only containing few recrods. And the icon in the system tray still there saying saving events......
I put processmonitor from sysinternals and repeat the same procedure and found "FAST IO NOT ALLOWED" error after I tried to dump the event. Is this related?
BTW, if I didn't choose Save and Clear but just save all logs, it works fine. I do get all events in the dump file. This sympton shows on all of my Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controllers.

Another log issue is for Windows Firewall logs. On one of my DC which is running on VMWare, I found the firewall log has never been updated. The log only contains few event when the firewall service started. And it seems stop logging after. If I restart the service, I get get few more records but soon the logging stopped. This issue is not observed on my DC which is running on physical box.

Any suggestion?

I am trying to DCPROMO a W2K8 R2 Core Server. I currently have a single W2K8 Core Server running as a dc.

My unattend DCPROMO file is as below:

The Directory Services Safe Mode password does not meet the minimum password length requirement of the password policy. Supply a longer password.

I have reset the domain administrator password which is 16 chars, one upper case, 4 numbers, one special charecter and the reset lower case.

I have also gone to the current DC and set the DSRM password to be the same so it can't be too short...

Bit perplexed as to the issue and why on earth it is too short !?!?!?

System Image restore failed

I am trying to do a bare metal restore of a Win Srv 2008 R2 computer from a few days prior. No hardware problems, everything is clean, and I verified that the Backups using the built in WinSrv backup server software are all successful. Backup images are being written to a USB external drive, there are about 300 of them on there!

I verified that the backup done was Bare metal recovery, system state, C:, and D:. Backup is done to an external USB drive.

I boot to DVD, select Reapir your Computer, get to the point where I select the image I want to use (it finds them all successfully), it's about 4 days old. It gives me a warning are you sure etc. etc., then almost right away it says "Syste, image restore failed. Windows did not find any disk it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. Offline disks, cluster shared disks, or disks explicitly excluded by user will not be used by Windows. Ensure that disks are online and that no disks are excluded by mistake. (0x80042414)

What is happening? I am sure I have done restores before, but with WinSrv 2008 not R2. I excluded no disks. Help!

How to Configure Alerts in Server 2008?

Hi,
In Server 2003, I configured alerts to run specific VBScripts when the thresholds of certain counters were exceeded (the scripts sent emails). I'm having trouble configuring this in 2008. I found a step-by-step guide from Microsoft on performance monitoring, but it did not speak to Alerts very much. The help files were also not helpful. Anyone know of a better guide?

Here’s what I tried to do:
I configured a new User Defined Data Collector Set to use Performance Counter Alerts, added the counters and thresholds, configured Alert Action to Log an entry in the application event log & start a data collector set, and added Alert Task to run C:\WINDOWS\system32\cscript.exe with Task argument C:\SCRIPTS\myscript.vbs. I tried to test it by configuring the LogicalDisk(C: )\%Free Space counter to alert when Above 1 with a 10 second sample interval. I started the User Defined Alert, but I did not get any results. I did not even see an entry in the Application Event Log. I also added the counter \Processor(_Total)\% Idle Time to Above 1, but still did not get any results. I verified that these counters were reporting that the values were above 1 in Performance Monitor.

Any help would be appreciated.

What is the best way how to make backup copies of Windows Server 2008 R2? Is it the system state plus volume C – or is it better to use different way? During the server restore, I need to maintain the whole address structure, the users´ profiles and the complete setting of the server. Which backup of Domain Controller is the best?

wbadmin recovery files with empty spaces problem

I cannot use "wbadmin start recovery" to specify files/folders containing empty spaces in -items or -recoverytarget parameter. I tried both single and double quote surrounding the path but doesn't work. Using old DOS 8.3 convention works but I'm trying to avoid the syntax.
Anyone has clue how to support empty space in file/folder path?

Hi all,

I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 forest that was installed from scratch as Windows Server 2008 R2. There are no other versions of windows installed. UAC is disabled on all machines. Each machine was rebooted after UAC was disabled.

I need to create a managed service account.

I run these commands on the domain controller:

New-ADServiceAccount -Name Service1Svc -Path "CN=Managed Service Accounts,dc=domain1,dc=domain,dc=local"

The account is created successfully and i can see it in ADUC

Add-ADComputerServiceAccount -Identity SERVER1 -ServiceAccount Service1Svc

All is ok.

I then log in to SERVER1 locally and run this command in PS with AD module:

Automatic Logon with Windows Server 2003 Sp2

To enable the functionality of automatic logon of the user when power to the server is resored after power failure, I have done the required setting in the Regedit by changing the default user name, pasword, autoadminlogon etc. Since with windows server 2003, while shutting down user has to enter the comments for the same. Also, if server was shutdown abruptly because of power failure, use has to enter the reason of shutdown in the event tracer during next login. Because of this Automatic logon feature does not work as required.
Kindly suggest how to change the event tracer setting so that for such cases windows login with the default comment.

Unable to Use Server Manager Remotely

I have a test network that includes 2 Windows 2008 R2 servers (one is Server Core) and a Windows 7 Ultimate workstation. I had been able to use Server Manager to remotely administer both of the servers from either Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2. For some reason, I can no longer do this. I went back to this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd759202.aspx#BKMK_gp and followed all of the instructions for a second time, but it didn't change a thing. To reduce the margine of error, I temporarily turned off the Windows Firewall as well. Looking at the Event Logs on the target machine, I see nothing in the System or Application logs, and only Success Audits for my attempts in the Security Logs. However, in the Windows Remote Management\Operational log on Windows 2008 R2 client, for each attempt there is an Error Event ID 219: "Received the response from Network Layer; status: 401 (HTTP_STATUS_DENIED). In the same log on Windows 7 client I get:

So it is a different error on each.
Now that I think of it, the only thing that has changed in between the time that this was working and now, is that several patches were installed a few days ago on all 3 machines, because it was a big Patch Tuesday. Is anyone else seeing this problem? I'm not sure what else to look for at this point.

Dividing Network tasks to individual Cores of the CPU

I'm dealing with a situation in which there is Windows 2008 installed on a powerful server having Intel dual core processor. There are two network cards installed on it and the server is receiving huge amount of data on both network cards. Can anyone please tell me how can I assign each core to each network card using Windows 2008 Server so that the data traffic is perfectly balanced on the two network cards?

DIAL-IN tab missing from RSAT package AD Users & Computers snap-in

The Active Directory Users & Computers snap-in that runs on Windows 7 as part of the RSAT package x86fre_GRMRSAT_MSU is missing the DIAL-IN tab on user accounts that is present on the snap-in when run on a DC.

Is there a reason for this?

RSAT problem connecting to Server 2008 R2

Dear forum members,

I have to set up a domain member Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 box, so in order to manage that computer remotely, I downloaded the "Remote Server Administration Toolkit for Windows 7". Now the problem comes. The machine I would like to use for the management is not a domain member. When I open "server manager" from "administrative tools" it offers me that I can connect to an other computer instead of the one I'm sitting in front of. In spite the fact that I can connect to a remote machine, I can't use an alternate credential to connect to the server, so finally... I get an access denied message. If anyone had this problem already, please let me know how can I connect to that machine in order not to get an access denied message.

ps.: I also checked the "scheduled tasks" snap in and it offers me to enter another credential, so I'm a bit confused with this. Why can I use this with my credential and why can't I use the server manager?

The presumption is that IE8 is the culprit but I suspect it is the domain and a DNS problem though my IT people have been unable to identify a particular solution

Instead of WSUS, where you download all kinds of things you don't need, or just plain wast your time managing

Is there a Windows update server cache, i can use instead

1. point all computers to one computer
2. if the update does not exist it is downloaded from Microsoft else use the cached file
3. if a new update the supersedes one or more cached updates, the cached ones are deleted
4. requires no management
5. Does not chew up my limited bandwidth

I've been trying to install an Active Directory, and I receive this error...

"Failed to copy install file c:\windows\system32\sbsntds.dit to c:\windows\NTDS\ntds.dit"

Windows 2008 R2 WMI problem

Hello.
I have a starnge problem with WMI on new Windows 2008 server R2 x84. So, let's drive in :

For remote WMI access i use j-interop Java library, that works fine with all prevous version of Windows 2008 Server in default installation and configuration (i always use administrator credentials).
In my code i create WbemScripting.SWbemLocator object and after that query needed COM interface, f.e. ISWbemLocator. Next i make WMI queries to WMI classes.
In new Windows 2008 Server R2 x64 i get this error: "Access is denied, please check whether the [domain-username-password] are correct. Also, if not already done please check the GETTING STARTED and FAQ sections in readme.htm. They provide information on how to correctly configure the Windows machine for DCOM access, so as to avoid such exceptions."
I try to connect with administrator credentials on target system. Firewall is disabled. All WMI services are running. Whatever i did, the problem is not solved. Also Anybody can help me?..

I accidently authorized a machine a a trusted host using winrm set winrm/config/client @{TrustedHosts="RemoteComputerName"}. I now want to list the trusted host and remove the one that I don't want.

How do I perform this task?

How can I connect to a remote domain using Active Directory Administrative Center (ADAC)?

I've got several AD forests. Some are separated from the live network by firewalls. I want to manage all domains in these forests using a single instance of ADAC in the live domain. Currently, since I don't have Win7 yet, I'm running ADAC on a 2008 R2 server, let's call in MgmtSvr1.

The various forests have 2008 DCs but not R2 DCs, so I've installed the Active Directory Management Gateway Service (ADMGS) and its prereqs. I've tested it using ADAC from an R2 member server in the domain, so I know the Active Directory Web Service is working on the target domain controller.

I've opened up TCP port 9389, on the firewall that separates the domains, from the MgmtSvr1 to the target DC running ADMGS. Firewalls are currently off on the DCs in question, to facilitate testing.

When I open ADAC on MgmtSvr1 and go to Add Navigation Nodes > Connect to other domains... and supply the IP address of the target DC, I get the error "Cannot find an available server in the 172.28.205.10 domain that is running the Active Directory Web Service (ADWS)."

Can anyone help with this, please?

I can access the target DC from PowerShell from MgmtSvr1, e.g. with the command: get-adrootdse -server 172.28.205.10 -credential $cred, having specified $cred = Get-Credential

RMS Not Accessing by Client Machine Error 139 on RMS server.

Hello everyone:

I am evaluating Windows 2008 RMS and i have installed windows 2003 AD for this testing.
I am using single cluster scenario with out SSL encrypted Site means http://server.domain/ port :80 is used.
Also i havenot installed SQL for this testing.I have only three virtual machines one is AD,second is RMS server and Thrid one is XP client.

I have followed all the step from Technet Website Step by Step Guide for RMS excluding those steps are required for Multi cluster.
I have susccesfully installed AD and then RMS server.When i connect the Client with domain user id as per instruction, it is not working with RMS server. Although i have installed the RMS Add-on required for XP client but when i have tried to connect and grant permission to my Office 2007 Word Document then it prompts for RMS server Authentictaion, When i enter the id and password to the server it shows connecting & configuring your IRM, after few seconds one window is appeared and ask me to Signin Either with Windows Live ID or Windows Local Account when i click to the local account option it gives an error "Unkonown operation,contact ur administrator"

When i check with my RMS server Event Logs then one Event with 139 ID is appeared Message shows that AD RMS Failed to query AD DS.

Please help me for this regard.
