Windows 2008 server dropping network shares to workstations
- Hi there, we have a Windows 2008 Server running as a virtual on a VMWare ESX3.5 Update 3 server. We have been having issues with it dropping connections to it via network drive mappings. If we reboot it seems fine for a short while and then it starts preventing connections to the shared folders. Originally the server was created with a domain that had no extension which messed up DNS pretty bad so we initially though that was the issue. We built up a new server in a new domain with an extension and moved everything over and joined the workstations to the new domain etc... this worked great for about 2 weeks and then started again. When it drops I can still RDP into the server and move around, I can still ping the server from a workstation. I can RDP into the server as a user and access the data via the physical drive letter, but if I try to go to a location via the mapped drive to a share on the server it says "Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use." Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Hello DCBennet,
According to your description, I understand that you can not access the mapped drive on a Windows 2008 Server.
When the issue occurs, can you access the files share via UNC path (ie: \\server\share\ )?
Do you have any Anti-Virus software running on this server? If so, please temporarily disable them to see if the issue continues.
If your server is running Symantec Anti-Virus product, there is a known issue when a Windows Server is running older versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 or Symantec Antivirus 10.2, they may experience performance issues for network shares, or intermittent loss of connectivity to SMB shares.
To resolve this issue, you need to install the Symantec update. For more information, please see the Symantec Knowledge Base article about this issueFor more information, you can refer to http://blogs.technet.com/windowsserver/archive/2009/12/11/symantec-solution-available-for-network-path-not-found-and-other-errors.aspx
Meanwhile, please also perform a clean-boot on the Window 2008 Server to check whether this issue persists. You can follow the steps below:
a) Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.
b) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).
c) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
d) Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the box and click "OK".
Does the mapped drive work after above actions?Wilson Jia

- Thanks for the reply. I have tried disabling the Symantec on it and will post if the issue still exists.
- DCBennett, is the issue the same as described here?
