Remote Hyper-V MMC does not properly refresh VM status
- Hi,
I installed Hyper-V on a clean Windows Server 2008 R2 and I installed remote management tools on a clean Windows 7. Both PC are part of the same workgroup.
To enable remote control, I used HVRemote script (http://blogs.technet.com/jhoward/archive/2009/08/07/hvremote-refresh.aspx).
Following this, I am able to control Hyper-V from the remote MMC but status does not automatically refresh. For instance:
- When I start a VM, status sticks at "stopped" and I need to do F5 to get the right status
- When I create a new VHD disk, VHD file is properly created on server but wizard on client freezes waiting for server feedback that seems to never come.
Basically it seems that client is able to send WMI requests to server but client cannot receive WMI feedback from server.
Any idea ?
Regards.
Sylvain

- Hi Vincent,
1. Same server, another clean client --> same issue
2. Same client, another server --> it works
So my current installation of the Hyper-V is the issue. But I have not figured out why yet as it's supposed to be a clean install.
For my learning, I will do more investigation about the issue on the first server but we can say my issue is solved.

Hi,
According to the description, it seems that the issue is related to Hyper-V Remote. As we mainly focus on the Hyper-V question about Windows Server 2008 R2 system and here is not the best support resource for Hyper-V Remote, it is recommend you to get further support in the corresponding community so that you can get the most qualified pool of respondents. Thanks for your understanding.
For your convenience, I have list the related link as followed.

- Hi Vincent,
Thanks for your feedback.
I am not really sure issue is related to HVRemote as I also tried to manually reproduce the configuration steps (DCOM permissions, WMI permisions, etc.).
Anyway, I will have a look to the link you provide.
In the meantime, is there an official Microsoft documentation that describres steps to be executed to enable remote management for Hyper-V R2 (DCOM, WMI, etc.) ?
Regards.
Sylvain Hi,
Generally speaking, if you want to manage a Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 computer remotely, I recommend that you add the Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 computer and the client computer you used to the same domain, and then add the user account you used to the local administrators group of the Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 computer. After these process, you will be able to manage the Hyper-V computer remotely.

· Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion? I want to see if the information provided was helpful. Your feedback is very useful for the further research. Please feel free to let me know if you have addition questions.

- Hello Vincent,
I agree with your recommendation (to add both computers in the same domain) and I am pretty sure it should solve the problem. However my issue here is part of a test environment where I wish to keep working without domain. I was able to do it (with Hyper-V R1) before without any concern once the initial configuration was done.
I had look to the HVRemote web link you provided but have not found anything usefull so far. Latest version of the script is supposed to be OK with R2 version. I will post a message on this forum to see if somebody has a similar issue.
In the meantime, I tried to manually reproduce what HVRemote is supposed to do using a Microsoft documentation called "Hyper-V Planning and Deployment Guide". There is a section about remote management in workgroup environment. But I got the same result (control is fine but still no automatic refresh).
Regards. Hi,
How about if you RDP to the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer and use the Hyper-V Manager on it to perform the same test, please check whether you get the same issue.
By the way, if you have any other client computer, please try to manage the Hyper-V from them to test whether you get the same issue on your Windows 7 computer.

- Hi,About RDP, it works. It's my current backup solution.About another client computer, I need to test it. I don't have another Windows 7 client available right now but I will try it.Regards.
