AnswerCannot logon to new R2 RTM virtual machine

I have a newly installed Server 2008 R2 RC Enterprise server with the Hyper-V role installed.

I created two virtual machines and installed Windows 7 RC and Windows 7 RTM on them.  I could logon to them and join the domain with no problem.

When I tried to do the same using Server 2008 RTM, install completes, and the VM reboots.  But on the next screen after the reboot, I have the standard "Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to log on".

I am not seeing the expected "You have to change your password before you can log on" message.  Somehow it has skipped over that, or cancelled out of it, without a password being set.  Without a password, I am unable to log on.  Anything I have tried is rejected.

I tried creating a password reset vfd for local Administrator on the Windows 7 RTM machine (after first enabling Administrator), but that did not work either.

I have tried this at least half a dozen times, formatting the vhd each time, but it always ends up the same.  Note all installs are 64-bit.

Anyone have any ideas?  Has anyone seen this problem?

I did some more searching here and got a suggestion from ManU PhiliP  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/0c11b1e1-ab13-4e85-b739-b3ecc8789381#3e01c609-0e35-4862-9c3a-0a8b62ee9a1d.

The proceedure recommended for Server 2008 did not work by it's self.  Any change I tried to Administrator errored out.  But I did have a command prompt open as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, or something like that.

Then I tried creating a new user.  No problem.  I set a password for the new user and added the user to the Administrators local group, relying heavily on net help.

It worked.  I was able to log on as the new user and start configuring the virtual machine.

This is the proceedure from that thread:

Please follow the steps to reset dc admin password

    1. Boot from a bootable CD/DVD Rom
    2. Select Repair option while asked in a GUI
    3. Select Command Prompt
    4. Change Directory to %System32%
    5. Type and enter move utilman.exe utilman.exe.bak
    6. Type and enter copy cmd.exe utilman.exe
    7. Reboot the system
    8. Select 'Ease of acess' from password window
    9. Type and enter Net user administrator <NEWPASSWORD>
    10. Login using new credentials
    11. Reboot

    Hi Brian,

The default password for Administrator is blank, did you just press Enter after pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE? After pressing Enter, you should get the prompt to change password.

    Thanks, Mervyn.

No, the first thing I tried was Administrator with a blank password, since I knew I had not set a password.  It was rejected with the usual error you get if you fat-finger your password.

    Hi,

Thank you for update. It’s very strange. I suspect it may relate to the installation DVD image. If possible, you may try another image to test.

    Thanks.

Now that I can log on, I tried to make it a domain controller.  I can't.

Installing the role is not a problem.  Dcpromo completes but after the obligatory reboot I get stop c00002e2, a device attached to your system . . . please reboot into directory services restore mode.  I can reboot into DS restore, but I can't really do a lot other than dcpromo /forceremoval.  I tried to use esentutl /r but it tells me the log file is corrupt.  With ntdsutil, I can't get very far either.

I have gone through this twice.  Dcpromo, reboot, stop error, dcpromo /forceremoval, and ntdsutil metadata cleanup on a different server.  After the last attempt, it failed on boot with stop c00002e3,  SAM failure.  Oh well.

    Hi Brian,

It seems system files are corrupt.

Please try to run "sfc /scannow" and verify your installation DVD is OK. If possible, change your installation DVD and test again.

    Thanks.

    Thanks, Mervyn.

I can't run sfc.  I can't even open any explorer windows, no Control Panel, no Computer, etc.  Many mmc consoles won't load.

I think you may be right about my DVD download.  I am downloading again, this time with the DL manager.

Why don't they publish checksums for these files?

No, the ISO is ok.  I downloaded again and compared.

Now, I am trying the Evaluation VHD image.

    Hi Brian,

Is there any progress? Could the Evaluation VHD works?

    Thanks.

The VHD worked at first, but became corrupt.

I think the problem is with the AMD SATA RAID1 mirror, as supported by the BIOS and driver.  I am trying a diferent driver.  I deleted, rebuilt and am formatting the array.
