Migration of files from server 2003
-
Saturday, December 29, 2012 4:01 AMMy client has a 2003 server with a few hundred gb of use data. I need to migrate this to a server 2012 file server while retaining all the ntfs security and permissions. I tried robocopy but all the security was stripped and the file inherited permissions from the parent folder. What tool can I use to move all their data? Thanks to all who reply.

What parameters did you use with robocopy? It should be possible.
Of course part of the operating system is Windows Server Backup - it will retain everything. Plain old copy will do it, but it's a bit of a hassle if anything needs to be restarted.
Or, you could pull the disk out of the 2003 server and mount it to the 2012 server.

Saturday, December 29, 2012 12:26 PMI tried /sec and /copyall without success. Server 2012 does not seem to have good old ntbackup.exe and the new version doesn't seem to offer support for .BKF files. The old files are on a Raid 5 so moving the disk isn't an option, but that does give an idea. Msybe I'll hook up my tb usb drives, robo copy the files there, then plug the drive into the new server, etc.

Hi Steve,
I am not sure if its compatible with Windows 2012 but there is a tool called File Server Migration toolkit that should help you in the migration process and keeping the security settings of that data.
You should have a look at it if you haven't already:

If you have time take a look at this free tool. I have used it before with no problems to migrate content but please do a test first.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/
Among its features you can find these:
- Copy NTFS extended attributes (compressed, encrypted, sparse)
- Copy NTFS security permissions
Hope it helps.

Sunday, December 30, 2012 8:31 AMHave you used this tool before? I wonder if it does a copy or move of the data? If it moves it and does not get the security, it would be a horrible mess to clean up. I'll create a small test first. Thanks for the suggestion. If it works, it's a life saver.

Wednesday, February 27, 2013 11:58 AMYour client would be much better off if you migrated to a S2008R2 machine. S2012 will be ready for production use by July, 2015."Steve R" wrote in message news:0abc2198-126a-4208-8c0f-e8c9ba939e73@communitybridge.codeplex.com...My client has a 2003 server with a few hundred gb of use data. Wednesday, February 27, 2013 12:09 PMIf Server 2008R2 were available as an option I would go that route. They are a non profit who gets charitable license pricing from Microsoft and only Server 2012 is available.
