I have upgraded my DC to server 2012 ("Server 1"), which manages a 2nd server which runs on server 2012 ("Server 2").

Server 1 was upgraded from 2008 R2 and since the upgrade keeps becoming unresponsive and my RAID keeps resynching and going offline. In the server manager on Server 1 I can't refresh or manage the server although I am logged onto it. Where do I start to fix my problems. is the route of the problem the RAID, server 2012 or both? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards Sunny Pawar

The root could be anywhere but start with the RAID, if that's not working properly nothing else will, and it's pretty uncommon to see RAIDs constantly resynching without a reason. You haven't given any details about it though, is it a hardware or software RAID? Start trawling the logs.

    Hi Melakh

It's a software RAID. I'm having problems with a lot of basic tasks on the computer. I can't launch the Event Viewer, start command promot, the server manager at the moment cannot read the hardware configuration, it's just stating 'Unknown'. The Server keeps becoming unresponsive, when I returned to server this morning, the screen was black, my remote login was showing the server as online and the domain can still be accessed but I can't access anything. This has happened a few times and a manual shut down is the only way I can restart the server. Server 1 is also not showing all the Roles and Services it should be carrying out, it's showing only Server 2 services and roles.

    Some things to try:

    • Can you access Server 1 with a different user account?
    • Can you run wevtutil (link) to copy the logs to another machine to view them?
    • Can you restart the DC in safe mode and access it?
    • Can you access the SMART records of the HDDs to see if any of them are dying?

Hi, I have tried the following so far:

    • I can access Server 1 as a different user.
    • I couldn't run the wevtutil but could now access the event viewer. I will attach the results after the diagnostocs is finished.
    • I started running a diagnsotics on the server hardware and an error came up at 30%:

    Error Code 2900:0021. MsgL IPMI - Feb 10 22:05:47 2011: O/S critical stop / shutdown sensor (0x00) Crtical stop during O/S run.

I carried on with the test and another error came up:

Error Code 2900:0221. Msg: IPMI - Dec 31 23:08:04 2011: system board: Event logging disabled sensor (SEL) SEL is full "System Board".

I carried on with the test and it is still running...

    • I have run the hardware diagnistics and all have passed apart from the above 2 errors. The memory test failed on the Event Log scan:

The event log has overflowed and needs to be cleared.

    Test(s) failed.

    • I have copied yesterday's event log below, it is too long to copy all.

It is recommended that you either configure a reliable time service in the root domain, or manually configure the AD PDC to synchronize with an external time source. Otherwise, this machine will function as the authoritative time source in the domain hierarchy. If an external time source is not configured or used for this computer, you may choose to disable the NtpClient.

It looks like you're running Exchange, Forefront, AD, DNS, DHCP, DFS, TFS Build, SQL Server, and some components of Sharepoint all on this machine, when you get this problem sorted out I'd give some serious thought to spinning up some VMs and isolating critical roles.

The errors I'd start looking at are:

    1. Warning 12/10/2012 4:17:11 PM Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-PnP 219 (212) The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#.
    2. Warning 12/10/2012 4:14:18 PM Microsoft-Windows-DNS-Client 1014 (1014) Name resolution for the name _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.GCG.local. timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

For 1 - this looks like you've some USB drives attached? Check you have the latest drivers for your motherboard that work with 2012 and try running the server without the USB drives plugged in

For 2 - check the BPA and DNS error logs and check what's missing

You should also look into wherever your H drive is because something's not working there, several errors like "Warning 12/10/2012 4:14:12 PM Server 2511 None "The server service was unable to recreate the share <<sharename>> because the directory H:\<<directory>> no longer exists."

When you described the server as unresponsive, do you mean that none of the services work, or just that the original user you were trying to log in with couldn't log in?

Hi, I will start looking at the 2 key areas.

When I describe the server as unresponsive I mean that:

    a) No Roles or Services are working or even show as installed on Server 1. All I can see that it is controlling Server 2 and see Server 2's roles.

    b) The screen turns black, the server is on, but nothing shows on the screen. I have tested the monitor on another machine and this does problem does not reoccur. I cannot remote in when the server is in this state. So I manually shut down and restart.

I have removed the usb connect devices and the server is not becoming unresponsive (at present). I have attempted to update any server drivers (Dell) and I am unable to do this as the installation keeps failing. I cannot run the Dell diagnostics tool as this also fails. The recent Errors are below:

What error do you encounter when trying to install the new drivers?

What is IP address 169.254.193.116 , is your DC public facing?

The errors I get when trying to install the new drivers are:

When installing Dell drivers: xxx has stopped working

When installing Dell Diagnostics Utility: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070422)

When installing Windows Updates: Code 80246008 Windows ran into a problem.

The IP address is a temporary IP address which windows assigns when the DNS serve cannot be contaced.

Ok, something isn't right with your DNS settings and I suspect your adapter settings too. If you can stomach it you might want to remove the adapter in device manager, re-install it and configure it from scratch.

Before that you should try and get Windows Update working - is BITS running? Try emptying your windows update downloads folder.

Nothing you've posted so far incidentally looks like a hardware issue, not sure if the Dell diagnostics will help you much, but you should log a support request with them to assist you getting the drivers installed.

    BITS appears to be running.

The donwload folder is empty, I still cannot download updates.

Dell are not supporting my server. Mine is now classed as 'Generation 2' as there is a Generation 3 suite released. On a Dell forum a user had a similar problem with drivers on a 2008 R2 system. He tried downloading all drivers, burnt onto CD then booted the system with the CD in the drive. This worked. I am going to try this now with the critical drivers for my server.

I have been setting up some VMs on Server 2 which now have all software installed. I have no ability to add or remove any features on Server1 so I am getting worried. I am thinking to set up Server 2 as DC...

You should go for more targeted support at this point, find a consultant to assist you or open a support case with Microsoft (both will obviously be chargeable).

Failing that, do you have backups and a recovery plan you can execute? It may be time to decommission this server and spin up a replacement.

Hi Melakh, I do have backups but they were on 2008 R2... The problems started almost straight after the upgrade to 2012...

If you can't get it working you will have to build a new server and migrate what you can to it - that could mean restoring the backup and accepting that you'll lose everything from when the issue started or it could mean trying to recover data from the server and restoring it elsewhere.

If the server has been doing basically nothing (on account of it not working) since the upgrade, then you have nothing really to lose by restoring your backup. If it's partially working and has still been serving things (like Exchange and AD) and has subsequently accumulated more data that you need you may need to get more creative.

If you're not comfortable with recovery, again I strongly suggest you pay for an expert to help you, recovery is not something you want to get wrong.
