I have a hyper-v server running whs 2011 on a server that does NOT have a dvd drive.  Is there anyway to get a USB or e-Sata dvd drive to be accessible via hyper-v?  Thanks a lot

Configure pass-thru access if you can (works for non-removable disks not sure about USB burners). Or install iSCSI target capable of sharing physical hardware (StarWind can do it for example free of charge, MS target cannot) directly on box with physical hardware attached and use iSCSI initiator from inside a guest VM to map your device as iSCSI. As a nice "side effect" you'll be able to share hardware over IP network and not only inside sindle hypervisor box.

    Hope this helped :)

BTW, just found another application. It's commercial but whetever...

Let me know if it had worked for you as it does USB directly (so guess any device will work and not only storage like in case with iSCSI):

USB - Shared by software and you'll need a helper in your VM. Check out http://www.eltima.com/products/usb-over-ethernet/

    Hi,

Have you ever consider using an ISO file?

Good one. Lack of free version and agent inside a VM kills however...

Works like a charm! Up to the point when you'll try to actually burn something...

The reason I am wanting the dvd is because I have WHS setup where when a dvd movie is inserted into a drive it is automatically copied to the WHS server than the dvd is ejected.  I am trying to make it user friendly.

Sure. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to share your burner with StarWind:

    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/nero-burning-rom-with-networked-cddvd-drive

Stick with the first part (you actually need to run StarWind where your eSATA drive is attached) and use VM built-in iSCSI iniator to connect.

    That's pretty much all :)

Those directions are not the same as the current software. I get to Add Device Wizard. Then I selected Optical Drive. Next option is Device type.  I have two choices

Physical (Select this option to export any optical CD/DVD drive.)

Virtual (Select this option to create and export a virtual optical drive.)

I would think I would need to select Physical however it has a LOCK next to it and is marked as NOT licensed to use.

You need physical (and it should be licensed of course). Please spawn a thread on StarWind forum for this ticket or we'll be get banned from here :)

So you do NOT have a free solution?

    Your original post...

StarWind can do it for example free of charge

We do. I just don't know what license type you've applied and why option should be working is locked with licenese key you've used.

Ok, Had a little chance to play with this. How does this work?  I guess my question is what route does the data take to get off the dvd to the virtual machine? Is it any slower then having a drive physically hooked up to the virtual machine? Is there any way to speed up the data transfer?

You cannot hook anything phisycally to your virtual machine as it's not physical machine.

You should have pretty much the same trasnfer rate.

Just an update to an OLD thread. VR38DETT solution WORKED. It is the ONLY way I have found to make an external drive work inside a HyperV virtual machine. Thanks again!
