Hyper-V role RDS requirement isn't clear

Upon installation of the Hyper-V role, it isn't clear that Remote Desktop Services features must be installed for RemoteFX to work. While I already knew this was a requirement from Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 8 makes this less clear by providing a Physical GPUs node in Hyper-V Settings. Upon clicking this node, you're simply presented an error-like message stating it cannot find any GPUs.

The UI was added to Hyper-V settings so an admin can see what GPUs are detected and are available to use, as well give the admin the ability to control which GPUs are used. It is not an indication that the required role services for Remote Desktop or RemoteFX are installed.
I can pass this feedback on the product group though, thank you for posting.

Right, that's the problem. Aside from documentation, there's no indication as to what pieces are missing. :) I think a simple change of that UI's text -- if RDS isn't installed -- is an easy fix (although adds more to the localization plate).
Thanks!

Hi All
I have a server that was previously running HyperV and RemoteFX using an AMD v5800. I have upgraded this machine to server 8, installed all the roles pertaining to HyperV and RDS and yet I am still getting the same error as above. I have also tried removing HyperV and RDS roles and reinstalling. The OS can see the card fine. Is there anything else I can check or shall I just Zap the machine and try a clean install?
Many Thanks

Can you post the exact error message that you are seeing? When you removed and re-installed the roles did you use the scenario-based deployment feature in Server Manager?

Hi Don
In the end I blitzed the server and started with a clean install. Interestingly the server would not let me use the W8 beta drivers and I had to use the AMD server 2008 reference driver for remotefx. (The same driver that was setup on the upgrade). Whilst we are seeing improved performance on WAN links, especially on video scrolling performance in IE is still delayed. Are there any tips on optimising for WAN links beyond changing the group policy to optimise for slow links?
Many Thanks
Gideon
