Does anyone know whether there will be a supported upgrade path from Server 2012 release candidate to RTM?
Thanks
Nigel

Hi,
There isn’t any news about the upgrade path. As far as I know, Microsoft will release the upgrade path when the RTM version is release.

The reason I ask is that during Windows 7 development this was specifically discussed and I was able to upgrade my own PC as per this:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-experience.aspx
without a fresh install, which would take much more work.
Thanks

I note in the technet details per this:

Supported upgrade paths
I must say this will limit my testing to throw away VM's rather than any useful evalulation.Upgrades to this version from Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are supported. However, only upgrades from the same server edition are supported. You will not be able to upgrade to subsequent releases from this release.

Many thanks for that. I had read a page very similar to that some time ago where it stated it would not be possible to upgrade the beta build, but thought the RC would follow the Windows 7 line of tweak the upgrade files, should work but could have side effects.
Your comments about testing on throw away VM's also apply to me.

Friday, June 08, 2012 7:50 PMThe more important question is "can server 2008 or server 2008 R2 be upgraded to server 2012"? Of course of the same version (enterprise, datacenter, etc...)

Windows Server 2012 (RTM) is now available internally in Microsoft and I can confirm that upgrade from Windows Server 2012 RC to RTM is not supported. You get the same error message that Johannes reported.

Rick, Both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 have already been Leaked by either someone @ Microsoft and/or some OEM that has no respect for both Washington State and U.S.A. Copyright Laws and is already available on several Torrent Websites. The person who posted that picture most likely downloaded it illegally from a Torrent Website.- Proposed As Answer by kevinpanzkedotcom Wednesday, August 15, 2012 2:09 AM

And just how did you get that picture when only Microsoft is supposed to have Windows Server 2012 RTM until tomorrow when it lands on MSDN and Microsoft Tech Net Subscriber Downlowds? Naughty, Naughty, Baby Boy!- Proposed As Answer by kevinpanzkedotcom Wednesday, August 15, 2012 4:53 AM

Not quite sure what you mean. JohannesMA got his screen shot from upgrading WinServ 8 Beta to WinServ 2012 RC last June. I got the same error going from WinServ 2012 RC to WinServ 2012 final release (which I got internally here in Microsoft).Rick - MSFT

But another relevant question is.... when will Windows 2012 RTM be available on Technet?
Windows 8 is now downloadable from today but Windows 2012 isn't.
Any news?

Rickee,
So for Technet/MSDN subscribers, we'll have to wait until the actual launch date before we can get our hands on the RTM copy of Server 2012 and have to just continue using and testing with the RC copy?

We ran some tests today at my office and were successfully able to edit the cversions.ini file to allow Server 2012 RC to be upgraded to RTM. We were even able to upgrade a 2012 RC Hyper-V Cluster to RTM!!! The only hiccup in upgrading was that the network teams were all deleted during the upgrade process; as a result the teams had to be recreated, networking info re-entered, and binding orders reconfigured. Pretty cool stuff, not recommended, but cool nonetheless.Aaron Marks

Hi Aaron,
Care to share with us how you went about doing this upgrade?

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 1:18 PMOf course when you call for support and you eventually have to tell support that you did this, you may not get the support you need.

Is there any part in particular that you're curious about?
Editing the .\sources\cversions.ini file is key.

This works for me in an Test HyperV System:
Shutdown all VMs (no saved state)
Copy W2012RTM DVD to the harddisk of the W2012RC
Editing the .\sources\cversions.ini file (original: [HostBuild] MinClient=8508.0 MinServer=8508.0 ) to MinClient=8400.0 MinServer=8400.0
Then starting the setup.exe from the harddisk location and choose "upgrade"
No problems seen yet.
Thank you John
