Is there a KB on migrating from Windows 2008 SBS to Windows 2012 Server.  My client does not use any of the SBS features - exchange, sharepoint, etc.  It is just a pretty AD/File/Print server.  Also, how would the CAL's work?

Or is it as simple as Build the 2012 server, make it a DC, seize the FSMO roles and GC, and setup the basic DHCP/DNS?

    Hello,

I would build a new Server 2012 Server, and then promote the Server 2012 Server as a DC and move all necessary roles across to 2012. Make sure that as part of this that you make the 2012 Server the PDC, and the main GC.

Once everything has been migrated in terms of AD, DHCP, DNS etc then make sure that you demote your SBS Server as SBS (I think!) doesn't support two DC's being on the network. So you will want to get everthing migrated as soon as you can.

To migrate the File side of things, I would highly recommend using Robocopy - I have used this many times before when migrating to a different File Server and it has never let me down.

    I hope that helps.

    HI,

Please understand that there is no specific documentation on migrating from SBS to Windows server 2012. Regarding your request, I suggest we could refer to the following similar thread.
