Unanswered Install OK, LAN OK but cannot access Internet

    Hi,

Installing Windows Server 2012 standard Build 9200. Once on a VM (Virtualbox 4.2) another one on a physical machine. Both seems to install OK and can access network share on local network. However, access outside of the LAN always failed. In spite the network icon saying "Network, Internet access". Firewall profile is set on "Guest or public networks".

Is there something extra to do to enable Internet access?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi there,

I have never test this before on the virtualbox before, but I think it is similar to VMware. Are you using the bridged mode or the NAT mode or Internal?

Virtualbox Network Settings: Bridged Adapter, virtualized network adapter is Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)

I have tested more the instance of Windows 2012 on the physical machine, I have tried without any success:

    - for IPv4, I have tried Dynamic IP and static IP

    - Disable IPv6.

    - Disable Firewall

None of this worked. The router rebooted, all other machines in the network could access internet OK. The only two machines that could not access the Internet is the ones having Windows 2012.

Names like google.com, yahoo.com are resolved OK, and strangely enough, ping is also OK. But when I open google.com in either IE or Firefox 15.01, the browser spins on "Waiting for google.com" and timeouts after about 2 minutes.

Name resolution is coming from your DNS, which may be local.

Does your environment need a proxy setting to access the internet?  I know at my work, I have to specific a proxy on Internet options > Connections > LAN settings > Proxy server.

Other than that, there is nothing different about setting up networking on 2012 than on earlier versions.  So, compare IE settings on a box that is working to one of these that are not working.

On the physical machine that are hosting the VM, can you access internet? If yes do you install any network threat protection on the host it self?If yes , can you disable and retest.

    - Proxy not used (Internet Settings, LAN: Automatic Configuration, "Automatically Detect Settings")

    - DNS has resolved bing.com and google.com as public IP. I went on another machine (not Win 2012) to test these IP and the browser showed bing.com or google.com as expected.

    - The physical machine just have had Windows Server 2012 installed. Hyper-V role not yet added. And this physical machine cannot access the internet either. Exactly the same issue than the VM.

In the Virtualbox VM, I changed the Network Adapter mode from Bridged to NAT. Then the VM can connect to the internet OK. When doing ipconfig /all the differences are:

(Virtualbox Network = NAT, Internet Access OK)

    IPv4 Address: 10.0.2.15

    Default Gateway: 10.0.2.2

    DHCP Server: 10.0.2.2

    DNS Servers: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220 (I use OpenDNS)

(Virtualbox Network = Bridged, NO Internet Access)

    IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.103

    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

    DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1

    DNS Servers: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

Hope that this could give you some extra clues. What is happening in Windows 2012 network stack to make it react differently between the two networks above?

What's the IP configuration on your physical host?  Is it in the same IP subnet as other, working, physical machines?

"Obtain an IP Address automatically". After boot, the physical machine obtain an IP in the same subnet than all other machines. Except that it cannot go out to the internet. I have also changed to static IP, same subnet, on a range that is outside of the dynamic IP range of the router. Same issue.

    Hi,

Thank you gentlemen for following up.Issue FIXED but I don't know the reason. I changed the router Linksys RT31P2 for TP-Link WR1043ND. And the issue is gone. I don't know exactly why the new router is more friendly with Windows 2012.

Initially I thought it was a double-NAT issue. But after eliminating the double-NAT. Windows 2012 still cannot access the Internet with the old router Linksys RT31P2. I have tried to play around with MTU values but there was no improvement.

I really would like to know the technical reason. If you have any idea, I would appreciate any explanation. Thanks.
