I am trying to install Windows Server 2012 onto a new Lenovo RD330 server which is listed in the HCL. I have so far setup the RAID controller for RAID 5 but have not formated any drives. The setup program briefly displays a message that it had an unexpected error and then restarts the server. This continues in a loop. I have tried the setup CD in another server and it seem to work OK. I have also tried to remove the extra RAM that I had orginally added to the new server. Any suggestions?

have you the need to create a volume (logical drive or virtual drive) within the array utility (so that Windows can "see" a storage volume)?

This is not uncommon.  Most likely during the installation process, you have to load the proper device drivers for your disk controller.  Just because the RD330 is in the Windows Server catalog does not mean that its device drivers are part of the Windows installation media.  There are a couple different ways to fix this, and both of them require that you get a copy of the 2012 drivers from Lenovo for your disk RAID controller.

The quick way is to have the proper drivers on a USB stick or another CD/DVD.  During installation, when it asks where to install, you are given the option to load device drivers.  At this point, browse to the USB stick with the drivers, or remove the installation DVD and replace it with the driver CD, install the driver, replace the isntallation DVD, refresh, and continue.

The second way is to inject the proper device driver into the original Windows installation media and then use that media for installations.

Well I got exactly the same problem...

I got a brand new RD330 with a RAID5 setup...First I tried to install Server 2012 from DVD and directly after "Loading Files"-screen a short "blue-screen" with an error message appears (something said like "a problem with your pc") and the systems reboots.

I also tried install the OS from USB stick...same error.

    A Win7 Setup starts normally.

So where is the problem? The RD330 is a Win Server 2012 certified machine...

Your case sounds like a BIOS issue.  Go to the vendor's web site and download the latest BIOS/firmware for your system and upgrade it to the latest.  Just because the system is brand-new does not always mean that it has the latest BIOS.  While you are on the vendor's web site, be sure to download the latest device drivers for disk and NIC, at a minimum.  During installation, you will have the chance to install the disk driver (and the NIC driver if you want to).

Unfortunately you are wrong. I updated the latest BIOS Version now but the error message still appears :-/

Sounds like it's time to give Lenovo a call.

    Already did that.

Lenovo doesn't support Server 2012 (and won't do it in the future). Really sad. A new server (from late 2012) and lenovo doesn't support Microsofts new server OS.

In fact there isn't any server made by lenovo that supports the new Server 2012.

But why does the Server 2012 not work with this machine? Is it a licence issue? Because the hardware seems to be supported...

    Thanks anyway for your help.

    Cheers

I don't understand where you come to that conclusion that Lenovo doesn't support Windows Server 2012 on their servers.  In fact, in your first post you pointed out that it is a supported server.  Furthermore, if you go to www.windowsservercatalog.com and search for Lenovo servers supporting Windows Server 2012 you get this list, the very first one being the server you purport to have:

True, Lenovo does not support the Windows Server 2012 operating system from the perspective of taking problem reports and generating fixes to the OS, as they are not the vendor of that software.  But, they had to go through the qualification process to get these server entries put onto the list, and they are the ones that say they support the running of Windows Server 2012 on these systems.  I still think your problem sounds like some sort of BIOS/Firmware issue.  That comes only from Lenovo.  I would try calling them again.  If you are again told that they do not support the running of Windows Server 2012 on the RD330, I would then ask them why they have it posted on Microsoft's web site that they do.

Thank you very much. So we now have two different meanings of the word "support".

I contacted Lenovo with that issue and they told me on the technical support hotline (and even confirmed with an email) that the RD330 doesn't support installing Server 2012.

The other way that you showed here seems to proove that it works.

But what can cause the Problem during the installation process? Any ideas? Perhaps the SAS controller?

    Regards

I am having this exact same issue. I have created a virtual drive in the raid (in a raid 1) - and I have attempted to boot dvd media, and usb thumbdrive media for windows 2012.  While loading the operating system files, it gets into probably 5 files and then it shows the sad face logo, with problem with pc, and restarts. The Windows PE environment isn't getting far enough into the setup to allow to select a external driver to be allowed to use to start the system .  Ihave tried with UEFI, I have tried it with standard. I have disabled TPM. I have enabled TPM. I have done everything except modify the number of memory modules (I only have 2 in this server, and one processor... it's not triple channel ram but supports it).  I can install VMware, boot, everything is perfect. Same with XenServer, it will load, and I can virtualize on it. I was able to Install Windows 2008 R2 to the system ,and then I attempted to perform an inplace upgrade to Windows 2012 thinking may be this would resolve the issue. Still no go.  The latest upgrade release is supposed to address an issue with install but it doesn't clearly say this is with Windows 2012.  I can't tell what I am doing wrong. I haven't disabled the RAID card to see if this is the culprit, and haven't gone much further than this.  so for me rd330 will support 2008, and hyper-v but not directly installed to the server!

    Same here.

I also have a 2 DIMM config and 1 CPU...and I also tried almost everything to get this machine startet with 2012...but failed. And I also get a workaround with VMWare ESXi...this works fine...not a single problem.

I'm not sure...perhaps the LSI SAS controller causes the problem. I'll get another SAS controller next week and I'll give it a try with the now one to install Server 2012 native...

    Cheers

Well...it took really a long time to come...but the latest BIOS Version officially Supports Windows Server 2012.

The changelog says "Win Server 2012 support".

So it's finally done. It works.
