Yes, though you need to check that all your applications can support it (for example Exchange 2010 doesn't I believe).

But is this supported by Windows/works in Windows Server 2012 AD?

This article states that it Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

    No difference for 2012.

If it was easy, the hardware people would take care of it.

No difference in the recommendation about doing it, either.  The recommendation is to not do it, as it is rife with the possiblity of all sorts of post-rename issues.  As noted earlier, some applications break.

As noted in the referenced article, test, test, and test some more.

What's about to add additional UPN suffix? That's much more easy than rename the AD.

been technical thats fine but when you have a customer thats been fussy and want to see the name displayed in a uniform way (Upper case here lower case there) then they dont want that.

Now I know what you are going to say 'It doesnt matter in windows' but does a non technical person get that. noooooooo

Exchange 2010 Just gaved up after the rename!!!!

Moral of the story renaming your AD will work but breaks applications....now how do I explain this on my next job interview

You renamed a domain with Exchange 2010 without checking first to see if it was supported? Hope this wasn't someone's production domain.

You were warned that this likely wasn't going to work.

Calm down Paul.......Of course this was a CLONE of the productive environment and I did the rename to show the customer it will break!! Thank god for VMware

Thought I would do good by letting the world know this will break stuff if done in production....Dont need to be MVP to use Google you know

Please don't tell me to calm down. The fact that a domain rename with Exchange 2010 is neither supported, nor works, has been well known and well documented for years now. "The world" really didn't need you to let them know this.

Uuuuuuhhhh... VMWare?? This sounds to me you are working with snapshots.

Damn good idea to work with snapshot’s if you want to kill the Active Directory.

The magic word for this is: "USN ROLLBACK".

I also call this as "technical suicide". Nice feature ;-)
