Just received 6 HP Proliant DL385 servers from a company as a donation for area non-profits. Installed Windows Server 2012 on two of them so far and both machines fail to detect USB ports once Windows Server 2012 is installed. If the DL385's are booted using a bootable CD (e.g. Acronis backup disk) - there's no problem with USB ports - they are detected and work fine. Once Server 2012 is installed and running USB support is non-existent. Device manager shows no device errors.
Planning on distributing these to non-profits in the area but it's difficult if they have no means for attaching external drives for backups. Any ideas on how to get the USB ports working under Server 2012 would be appreciated.

You might be out of luck for support of 2012. www.windowsservercatalog.com is where Microsoft lists all hardware that hardware vendors have certified to run their various server operating system. There is only one DL385 listed as being supported - ProLiant DL385 G7 3.30GHz Quad Core. That's one problem with donations - companies like to unload old hardware that was released before the current operating system was released, so the current operating system may not know what it needs to know in order for the hardware to function properly.
Go out to HP's site and download the latest BIOS and devices drivers for all devices on the box. If that doesn't do it, you might have to resort to running 2008 R2 SP1 on them.

Appreciate your thoughts. Went out today and picked up a PCI USB expansion card for $5.99, installed and found that it works fine! Seems only the onboard USB slots are unsupported for some reason. For $6.00 I was able to get the USB support I need under Windows Server 2012. Thanks for your thoughts though...
