Importance of Windows 2008 R2 certification
- We have a 2 node Win2008 cluster with multiple VMs running. Also we have a standalone Win2008 Hyper-V server. The nodes and the standalone server are Dell 2900 III servers and are Win2008 certified. The Dell MD3000i SAN used by the cluster is Win2008 certified as well. However the servers are only at the supported level for Win2008 R2. And on the Microsoft site Win2008 R2 doesn't even show up on the page about the Dell MD3000i SAN. We'd like to get the nodes to R2 for the live migration feature mainly for our VMs. But with the servers only at the supported level is this something that shouldn't be done and we're stuck with Win2008? Are people upgrading their hardware when they go to R2?

- As both your nodes as well as your SAN is from Dell, I would contact Dell about the R2 certification.
Not Microsoft, but Dell is responsible to certify their own HW.
If Dell is not planning to certify for R2, then you are indeed stuck or need to upgrade your hardware

- The hardware just needs to be "Logo'd" for Windows 2008 and pass the cluster validation tests. See more details about the 2008 cluster support policy here:

- So the real problem I may have, if Dell plans no R2 certification, is if the future I try to get MS support for a problem and they could easily say "your configuration is not ceritified". And I think I have read where they say if your cluster isn't certified it's not fully supported.
