Server 2008 R2 Cluster(HYPER V) Validation Errors

I'm getting a few errors when trying to validate my servers for a cluster. Here is my configs for both servers. They are identical.
Server 1
NIC1 - Management 10.20.1.57
NIC2 - iSCSI 10.20.10.100(iSCSI VLAN strictly for iSCSI to our EMC)
NIC3 - Virtual Network 10.20.1.X(DHCP)
NIC4 - Heartbeat 10.20.11.2(Cross over cable going directly to the other server)

Server 2
NIC1 - Management 10.20.1.58
NIC2 - iSCSI 10.20.10.101(iSCSI VLAN strictly for iSCSI to our EMC)
NIC3 - Virtual Network 10.20.1.X(DHCP)
NIC4 - Heartbeat 10.20.11.3(Cross over cable going directly to the other server)

I get this error when trying to validate under networking.

Network interfaces server1.local - NIC4 - Heartbeat and server2.local - NIC4 - Heartbeat are on the same cluster network, yet either address 10.20.11.2 is not reachable from 10.20.11.3 or the ping latency is greater than the maximum allowed 500 milliseconds.

DHCP Server or Service?

I seem to be getting a little confused, in the cluster manager i can add a service when i select DHCP Server i get the error message "only one instance of this role is allowed in the cluster" on fair enough i have installed the DHCP Server role on each node. How do i progress with making a clustered DHCP Server?

What is the difference between DHCP Server and DHCP Service, i know i can make a DHCP Service without having the DHCP server role installed on the node, do i even need to install the dhcp server role if i just want a clustered dhcp service?

File Server Drive Icon different to all the rest

I am not sure if this is normal but i have several file servers/ resources running in a clustered mode. On this one file server service i have noticed that the drive icon in the windows MY Computer area looks like a normal drive. It is the same icon as if the drive is not active but it is active, is this anything to worry about as all the other icons are file server icons. I have tried removing the resources and recreating it, taking it offline and back online, restarted the nodes etc. No matter what i do i cannot get the file server drive icon to appear in the my computer?

I also checked the dependencies and they are exactly the same as the others, it fails over and works exactly like it should too.

DHCP Clustering and Database on a cluster resources

Does anyone know if there are any issues with clustering a DHCP server and with the database on a shared cluster resources? I noticed that when you make a DHCP clustered service that it defaults to the local path, i was wondering if it had to be local or if it can be clustered drive/ share.

Also if you do have it local, does the database replicate on a local level to all other nodes who can be possible owners of the DHCP service?

Adding multiple Subnets

Does anyone know how to add multiple subnets to the cluster, i have two network adapters one is private network the other is public. the public ip range differs to the ip range i would like the add a service, they are on the same vlan but i am restricted to only adding services to same subnet as the public nic.

I have tried adding an additional ip address to the nic but this fails, is there another way of doing it? i was thinking another nic and setup routing but this seems a bit ott for a task which seems so simple.

I am about to move our Windows 2008 2-node cluster to new SAN storage. I have found resources detailing how to move Windows 2003 / SQL 2005 cluster resources to a new SAN (essentially, quorum and data drives will be replaced), but are these steps applicable on Windows 2008?

I see a method using clusterrecovery to move disk signatures and a second option using the cluster UI. Is there a definitive resource for how to handle this on Windows 2008?

Creating a 2008 Cluster in a Box using VMWare Server with virtual shared SCSI disks

I'm trying to test Windows 2008's cluster using VMWare Server. During Failover Cluster Validation Report I get an errore stating "Disk bus type does not support clustering". Is this because VMWare's uging SCSI bus that's not supported in Windows 2008 clustering?

How do I disable failover on a 2003 cluster?

I have a two-node Exchange 2003 cluster. There is going to be a network interruption and I would like to leave Exchange running during the interruption, without it failing over. Is there a way to disable failover on a 2003 cluster? On the properties of the resource groups (Exchange and Cluster Group) I can set the Failover Threshold to 0. Would this work? Thank you!

consider the following scenerio where i have 2 servers in one office and the third residing in other country.these three servers we are adding to a NLB Cluster.

wat i need to do now is when i recive a request from any ip address in the other office it has to be serviced by the server residing in that office.

Does anyone know the best practice for setting up MSDTC for SQL 2008 on Windows 2008 2 node cluster?

I have a separate cluster group with a cluster name, IP and cluster disk3 separate from the main cluster group and the SQL Server cluster group.

Some suggest moving the MSDTC resource group and cluster disk into the SQL Server cluster group. Is this correct? Why?

Hi Expertise,

I want to create a cluster between two servers in Window Server 2008 R2. In this scenario, I want to create 3 partition to be clustered for both servers. Partition 1 = 2TB, partition 2 = I.9 TB and partition 3 = 100 GB.In my case, I created 5 LUN from SAN Storage. The details of the LUNs as per below:

LUN 1 = 1TB
LUN 2 = 1 TB
LUN 3 = 1 TB
LUN 4 = 900 GB
LUN 5 = 100 GB

My question are,

1. For cluster purpose, should I initialize the disks by using GPT? or I must use MBR.

2. For cluster purpose, cant I spanned the LUN1 and LUN2 to make Partition 1 = 2TB, LUN3 and LUN4 to make Partition 2 = 1.9 TB?

3. If I spanned the Partitions in node 1, is node 2 can view all the partitions created with the same partitions size (Partition 1 = 2TB, partition 2 = I.9 TB and partition 3 = 100 GB) ?

I really need the advise from the expertises before I can proceed the cluster setup.

Remote Session Lost During Validation

Hi,

I have two clusters built using Windows 2008 - two nodes each. The first is VM and for test only. I run the cluster validation and have no issues other then a fibre error. (The fibre issue is not the problem.) I'm able to run the test from either node without being disconnected.

However, when I run the cluster validation on either node of the physical cluster, my remote session is disconnected until the validation is complete. I am able to reconnect to the session and see the report. During the test, a ping of the node where the test is run fails.

The virtual cluster uses fixed IPs while the physical cluster uses DCHP. Is this the cause of the disconnect? Is there something else that is I should be checking?

Local ping is IPv6?

Our adapters are configured to use only IPv4. However, I have noticed that I get a IPv6 address when I ping the node name from the node. Does this matter? Is there a loop back adapter of some sort I need to configure also?

Connect via \\IP-address\share --> does not work
Connect via \\servername\share --> does work

Has somebody an idea what this could be?

Rename SQL Server virtual name (and impact on VCO)?

I already posted this in the SQL Server HA group, but haven't had any luck getting responses there. I'm thinking this list might be more appropriate....

I need to come up with a way to rename one of our SQL Server 2008 virtual names. The SQL Server instance is part of a two node Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster. According to Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178083.aspx), the only steps required are to rename the SQL Server network name and then take that resource offline and bring it back online. I guess I'm a little confused at how the VCO comes into play here. The aforementioned article makes no mention of that. I'm assuming one needs to create a new VCO computer account and grant the CNO account full control. Should that be done prior to renaming the network name? Has anyone attempted to do this before?

mpio qlogic and windows 2008

I am getting error on my cluster I think because I am not running mpio. I have dual channel fibre channel HBA's. I am new to 2008 but noticed that there is built in MPIO support now. Will the work with qlogic? I haven't seen any information on MPIO drivers for 2008 from qlogic. I am not having any problems failing over the clusters. That works just fine.

Server 2008 cluster fails when disconnecting public LAN

within the last few days, I set up a Windows Server 2008 Cluster network for testing purposes (Virtual environment using VirtualBox). It consists of three 2008 servers (one DC, two cluster nodes). The windows cluster is running a DTC resource as well as a clustered SQL Server 2008. The cluster configuration has three disk resources, connectes via iSCSI: one quorum disk, one disk for DTC ans one data disk for the SQL server.

So far, everythink is working correctly. Moving resources from one node to another works flawlessly, also moving the default group is no problem. If I shut down the active node, all resources fail over to the second one. Pulling both the public LAN and the heartbeat LAN also works as expected.

There is only one situation in which the cluster fails:

If I disconnect only the public LAN from the active node (no matter which one of the two nodes is active), the cluster groups (default group, DTC group and SQL group) fail instead of being moved to the other node. During this, events 1127, 1077, 1069 and 1205 are logged. Event 1205 seems to be the most important:

"Der Clusterdienst konnte den geclusterten Dienst oder die geclusterten Anwendung "W2K8-CLUSTERDtc" nicht vollständig online oder offline schalten. Möglicherweise befindet sich mindestens eine Ressource in einem fehlerhaften Zustand. Dies kann sich auf die Verfügbarkeit des geclusterten Diensts oder der geclusterten Anwendung auswirken."

Translates this is something like "The cluster service was not able to put the clustered service or the clustered application "W2K8-CLUSTERDtc" completely online or offline. At least one of the resources may be in a faulty state".

W2K8-CLUSTERDtc is the name of the DTC group. The same event is logged for the default cluster group as well as the SQL cluster group. In this Case, all three groups fail, the disk resources remain online on the faulty node.

Some additional information:

Cluster IP: 192.168.1.40
DTC Cluster IP: 192.168.1.41
SQL Cluster IP: 192.168.1.42
Quorum Disk; Q:

What could be the reason for this behavior? Any help would be appreciated.

Physical Disks going offline in Windows Cluster 2008

We have two node Windows 2008 Cluster setup with the Quorum policy as Majority with Witness disk. We were running a service having 5 storage disks as the resources. All disks including the witness were online..
Our FC switch went down and lost connection to all disks..We then rebooted both the nodes in Cluster and it came up showing witness disk as failed and other 5 disks as "offline".. We brought up the FC switch and after about 15 mins the witness disk became online automatically as per the configured failover policy. But the other disks remianed offline. We had to manually bring them online.

Why would disks go to offline ? I have searched the internet to find a good info on various states for the resources and how the state transition occurs but have not found any.

IIS7 NLB Clustering

Hi, I need a guide to setup IIS7 NLB clustering. I also need to know how to configure my MSA2012sa device in terms of the storage and volumes. Do I create 2 seperate volumes for each server or does it need to be one storage for all the servers. I've setup a SQL Failover cluster last week and in that case I create just one shared volume, which works fine, but I suspect it works different for IIS7 nlb clustering.
I also need to know how the IIS7 server updates the other nodes if you make a change on the main node in terms of the website.

Cluster Group\Share Layout

Hey all - I am getting ready to migrate about 70 shares which span across seven disks to a Windows 2003 clustered solution. The actual data migration is being done "hot" via EMC OpenReplicator (block level copy from source to new disks on cluster).

I am trying to decide between creating one cluster group and having all shares and disks within. Or having a cluster group per disk with the associated shares which reside on that disk.

I would like the number of cluster groups to be minimal, but I don't want to wait for who knows how long it will take for 70 shares to come online within a single group.

Suggestions? Other ideas?

I have problems to create my database cluster.
The virtual hostname, file server, and disk resources are correct created, but i always get an error when the db2mscs tool tries to create the instance and the service.
Maybe you can help me with some error codes. Where can i find what the following means? Any ideas?

CSV using wrong network

I've been having trouble migrating VMs to my SAN.
Having watched this large file transfer go through it really looks like something isn't right with my network.

                 Storage network

That's my network, when I copied a large file to the SAN from host 2 and watched the network adapter activity it seemed to go from host2 over the Public network to host1 then to the SAN, the normal network uses 172.31.x.x and the storage 10.x.x.x. Obviously this will affect the VMs and just seemed to mess a lot of stuff up. How can I correct this?

I've also checked the metric settings Storage was 10100 and public was 10000, I've now set the storage network to 1000 using powershell but this doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Anyone got any ideas?

Windows 2008SP2 - Cluster Test fails at "List all disks"

I have a issue which is somewhat concerning to me.

When every I do a Cluster Test, the system hangs at "List all disks" and subsequently restarts the server.

I have two identical servers in hardware & software setup and experience the problem on both.

My disk drives are 2x 146GB 15k SAS drives (Mirrored) on LSI Logic ELP8708 controllers.

Anyone experiencing a similar problem?

IIS7 failover cluster

I need to setup a IIS7 failover cluster - are there any good guides out there somewhere - the only ones I see is suggesting using NLB, but my manager don't want that solution in place. We will eventually have 3 IIS servers and a main server that will be used for clustering. So the main cluster server will have 3 clusters, but will act as the passive node.
Any help will be appreciated. I'm getting all the equipment tomorrow, so it will be a long day with msa raid configuration that can takes such a long time.

Clustering Setup Fails

Hi all

I am attempting to setup a high available cluster with server 2008 r2 enterprise.

The hardware is an Intel Modular Server with 2 blades. At present, I only have 1 NIC confirgured on each which I know is an issue but shouldnt prevent the initial setup ?

The NICS are static IP's 10.0.0.41 and 10.0.0.40 with gateways and DNS all enteredt. Netbios is enabled on both.

When it asks for a cluster name, I eneter a cluster name and enter an IP address that is currently not in use - 10.0.0.11

I have checked DNS and there is no entry for the IP 10.0.0.11

When I attempt to create the cluster, It almost completes and then fails saying cleanup unsuccessful.

The shared storage is setup and ready to go and I took it offline before I attempted to create the cluster. I have two shared LUN's, 1 1GB in size for the Quorom and 1 400GB for the VHD files and the storage passed the config test OK.

There is probably not enough information here but if someone can help, I can provide whatever you require.

Change time domain controller

The time of our Domain controller is running 10 minutes ahead. So we need to set the time 10 minutes back and sync with e.g. an correct external time source. What are the consequnces on windows 2003 4 node cluster with sql 2000 and exchange 2003 ? Are there any procedures to do this without bringing down the whole cluster ? And what will happen with kerberos tickets on the network, because the time difference in a kerberos ticket cannot be more than 5 minutes...

Problems with cluster failover during DNS outage: What are configuration recommendations?

Recently our primary DNS (AD domain controller) server crashed and this caused a file and print cluster to failover, loss of NTP time source, cluster service failures. There are a lot of messages in the system logs, it is a bit overwhelming and confusing, but the root cause to it all seems to be a dependency on DNS that caused cluster resources to fail. We have redundant DNS servers, so it is hard to understand why cluster services didn't use a secondary DNS server and not failover. I would like to prevent a similar situation in the future.

This is a Windows 2000/2003 AD with integrated DNS and Windows Server 2003 R2 file & print cluster. The public network adapter contained both a primary and secondary DNS entry. The primary DNS server (AD DC) crashed, during the restore of the DC, DNS was behaving "oddly" and led to a failover of the cluster. The short-term solution to get the cluster to remain stable was to update the public network adapter DNS property and remove the primary DNS server IP address, leaving only the "secondary" DNS server IP address.

Has anyone dealt with a DNS server crash in their environment that subsequently caused their cluster to failover? What can I do to make my cluster tolerant of a DC and DNS server failures?

MSA2012sa unit shared volume problem

Hope you can help me. I'm also setting up a cluster for the 1st time, but I have an issue at the moment.
We have 2 Windows 2008 servers and an HP MSA2012sa device for storage.

I've created a raid 5 array on the MSA unit and created only 1 volume and mapped the 2 servers to that volume.
I then formatted the drive on the one server and it's now showing up as drive D on both servers.
The problem I have is that when I create a folder on Server 1 it does not show up on Server 2. I need to restart the servers before I can see the created folders from the other server.
Can you please let me know how you created the shared volume between your servers.

New 3rd node to cluster, What is print server cluster group error message 'Failed to ugrade printer settings'

I have an Windows Server 2003 R2 active/active two-node file and print cluster with 3TB of file share data and about 600 printers (four cluster groups "virtual servers"). It has been running flawlessly over a year and I have been able to do administrative moves of the groups as well as have had a hardware-related failover event.

To increase more capacity I added a 3rd node, the aim being an active/active/active cluster. First step was to add the 3rd node. That worked. I moved the 'Cluster Group' and the quorum drive Q showed up on the new node. I then moved a file server. No problems, all resources and the group moved over fine. I then moved a print server. No problems. Feeling confident I then moved another print server. I got a great number of the following message for a variety of printers and print drivers:

Notice that in one case the printer is identified with a UNC path (\\PCWMS07\BCMAS09Q) and in the other case only as the printer name (PCPMR01Q). Also notice the typographical error in the message "ugrade" not "upgrade". I've done some searchs on Google and Technet but can't find any clues as to what this is. I'm sure it is related to the fact that this is a cluster resource since that is the only variable that changed.

Windows Server 2003 R2 cluster. My %SystemRoot%\Cluster\ClusDB file is 6656KB before adding 3rd node, 7936KB after adding 3rd node. Cluster quorum log size set to 16384KB. File and Print only.

Why did I get the following message (isn't 16384KB large enough)?, What does it mean the log will be 'reset'? There were no following messages, should I assume the 'attempt' to reset the log was successful (and what would success be)? To what new value should I adjust the maximum size to be? I changed it to 24384KB.

I get the above error when trying to copy a .bak file to our SQL cluster server. We are using 2008 R2 and sql 2008. This only seems to happen when copying files that are larger than 1GB

Just curious if anyone knew of any good resource material for a project I have coming up with an existing active/passive clustered server. Essentially I have to pull all of data off my SAN luns and onto the local hosts, reconfigure the SAN, and then recreate the luns, move the data back, and get the clustering back on track. I've seen quite a bit of material about moving a cluster from one set of SAN luns to another set, but that's sort of a different process..the new luns won't be available until the old luns are gone. I would love to do it this way, but the SAN doesn't have the space to support this procedure... Any tips are appreciated!

createing a 2 node cluster server 2008

Hi,

This has been giving me issues for 2 days. i have 2 HP Proliant DL380 G5 servers and an HP MSA2012sa for shared storage connected with MINI SAS cables. for the life of me i cant get the cluster created!

i run the validation and everything validates fine accept for that i dont have rights to the default computers folders on our domain, no problem though because i have created the comptuer name for the cluster in an OU that i have full rights to and have disabled it.

when i start to create the cluster it starts to run fine untill it gets to "forming cluster" then it says "the opteraion is taking longer than expeced" and after 2 minutes it bombs out.

after forming cluster it says unable to successfuly cleanup.
to trouble shoot cluster creation problems run the validate a confguration wizard on the servers you wan to cluster.
an error occurred while creating the cluster. an error occurred creating cluster 'clustername' this operation returned because of the timeout period expired.

i have created the cluster using only one node and tried to add the 2nd node later and it will also not work. The server 'servername' could not be added to the cluster. An error occurred while adding node servername to cluster servername. The cluster node is not reachable.

i can ping both servers from both servers i have no idea why it would say its unreachable.

i have read a book on how to create clusters and the book made this sound so simple and i would have no problems, this could not be farther from the truth. can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?!?!?!

Failover Cluster in Win2k8 hyper-V (Guest failed to to validate each nodes )

Hi,
I have been working on this project for the past days, and keep gatting the same issues after reconfigurations.
The issue is whikle validating , i keep getting an error msg. that my 2nd node does not have the failover cluater features installed (failover cluater has been insataaled on both nodes)
My archietect is win2k8 hyper-V, connected to a dell San. 3 VM's insatalled, 1st VM serves as a domaim controler, 2nd VM serves as Node1 (failover cluster insatlled) , and 3rd VM as the Node 3 (failover cluster insatlled)
Has anybody has this issues and resolved it? or put me through how to solve the issue please as it is driving me NUTS.
