    hi,

When I open the registry editor, click the File tab, I get a list of choices, one of which is "
Connect Network Registry"; Now, when I click "Connect Network Registry" I get a message that says "The program cannot open the required dialog box because no locations can be found"; the Network Registry snap-in doesn't get installed. How do I get around this?

    Hello,

the question about the names was only to make sure the Primary DNS suffix and DNS suffix search list are correct.

As stated in the netdiag and dcdiag output "joeabzekarian" has problems with missing sysvol/netlogon shares. PLease check if they exist and that you can access them.

Also make sure you have a forward lookup zone for the 'joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com' and the '_msdcs.joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com'. Here the DC must be listeed with A record and Nameserver record.

If the sysvol/netlogon shares are missing check with this article:

    hi,

    After reviewing this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315457
and following the instructions for rebuilding the missing shares, a few days later I noticed the netlogon and sysvol shares were listed with the other shares!

    Check out the results:

    Share name   Resource                        Remark

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    IPC$                                         Remote IPC
    H$           H:\                             Default share
    E$           E:\                             Default share
    C$           C:\                             Default share
    ADMIN$       E:\WINDOWS                      Remote Admin
    G$           G:\                             Default share
    NETLOGON     E:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\JoeAbzekarianServer.MyNetDomain.com\SCRIPTS
                                                 Logon server share
    SYSVOL       E:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol        Logon server share

    The command completed successfully.

As you can see, the net shares have appeared as if by magic, and the initial problem has cleared up also; so, thanks.

    Hi,

Are you getting this problem on Client Machine in the Network ?

Pleas post IPCONFIG /ALL of the Machine in question. Make sure it is pointing to the correct DNS.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

This message is usually caused by the improper DNS settings. As Nitin has suggested, please make sure the IP setting is pointing to the correct DNS Server. Meanwhile, it can also be caused by single-label DNS names. If you are using single-label DNS names, please refer to the following article to modify registry:

Information about configuring Windows for domains with single-label DNS names

Yes if the DNS pointing is not correct then that may cause issues. If this is the Client Machine on the Network then make sure it points to a valid DNS Server for DNS. Make sure you are able to Ping the other Machines and DNS Server from this Machine. Please take a look at the above mentioned Article.

Also please post the Ipconfig /all output here.

    Thanks,

Allright so this one is a DNS Server. Well i would also require the outputs of following --

    > Nltest /dsgetdc:Domain Name
    > Dcdiag /v
    > Netdiag

Also let me know the Errors you see in Event Viewer related to Directory Services, W32Time and DNS.

    Revert back with the results.

    Thanks,

    hi Nitin,

I'm having a little trouble installing the support tools; whenever I run the support.msi file, the install wizard informs me that the support tools are installed however, when I try to run Nltest there is no such program and there is no Support folder in the Program File folder; any ideas?

I've tried looking for the Support Tools in Add/Remove Progams and in the MMC snap-in list to no avail and the Support Tools installer still insists that the Support Tools are installed; now what? Oh, I clicked off the firewall.

Never mind you can post the 'Dcdiag /v' and 'Netdiag' Output here.

    > Make sure the Firewall is turned off when you try to connect 'Network Registry'.
    > Also run 'Netstat -anob' and check if there is any Service is eating up all the Ports on the Server.

    Hello,

your DNS configuration on the NIC will cause problems. You have added the router ip address, 192.168.1.1, also as DNS server, remove it there. I assume you have confogured this to have internet access. To achive internet access in the domain for all domainn members, you have to setup a FORWARDER on the DNS server properties in the DNS management console.

So you server has the computername "joeabzekerian" and is in the domain "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com"?

    hi Meinolf,

This is correct; I have set up a forwarder, the computer name is "joeabzekarian" and is in the domain "joeabzekarian.MyNetDomain.com"; what significance does this have?

    Hello,

if you open the DNS management console and connect to your DNS server, i assume the DC, expand the + and you can see forward and reverse lookup zones. Inside the Forward lookup zones you should see both zones listed.

so 'joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com' and the '_msdcs.joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com' are listed under the forward lookup zone and all domain machines are listed there with there A record and the DNS server also with a NS record?

    hi Meinolf,

Actually, there is a folder that says "joeabzekarian.MyNetDomain.com", one that says "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com", and one that says "_msdcs.joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com"; now, in the _msdcs folder there is a SOA record, two(2) Name Server records, one that says joeabzekerian.joeabzekarian.MyNetDomain.com and another that says joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com and there is one CNAME record; there is no A record in this folder; Now, in the  "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com" folder there are two(2) A records, one that says "same as parent folder", both with "192.168.1.100" in the data field; there is one Name Service record and one SOA record; and finally in the "joeabzekarian.MyNetDomain.com" folder there is one Name Service record and on SOA record.

    Hi,

I am seeing a lot many issues here. Ldap, DC Discovery, Domain Membership, Netlogon Tests Failed on the Server.

The very first step here is to make sure DNS is running fine. I read your last post here and i am getting confused with the names. As you mentioned the MSDCS Folder is named '"_msdcs.joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com'....and so the Domain Name is "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com''

If this is correct then whay do we have "joeabzekarian.MyNetDomain.com" in DNS Tree.

    Please provide these details --

    Domain Name
    DC Name
    Total Domain Controllers
    Total DNS Servers
Any other Domain in existence ?

Once you fix the DNS Issues please check the below mentioned things as well --

Please check if the User Account Control (UAC) value of the DC is correct or not. It should be 532480.
You can check the same from ADSIEDIT.MSC. You would require Resource Kit tools to get this snap-in. Once you open the Snap-in, Expand the Domain Partition and right Click on the DC Name under Domain Controllers OU. Go to properties and  look for the Attribute called 'User Account Control'. The value of a DC should be 532480. If it's not then the DC will not advertise itself as a DC.

Second, check the Sysvol and Netlogon Shares by running 'Net Share'. If these are not shared then again DC will fail the Advertisement Tests. You can also check NTFRS Events in the Event Viewer.

Third, make sure the Ports are available on the Server. You have Microsoft Updates KB 951746 and KB 951748 installed on the Server. If you see DNS.EXE utilizing all the Ports on the Server in 'Netstat -anob' output then please uninstall these Ports and make these keys on the Server--

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters\SocketPoolSize   DWORD Value 500
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\MaxUserPort    DWORD 65535
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\Kerberos\Parameters\MaxPacketSize  DWORD Value 1

    Reboot the Server once done.

    Revert back with the results.

    Thanks,
    Nitin

    Hello,

as already said from Sloth8 please give some more info about the different domain names, why do you have 2, was there a domain rename before or just a typo? You have to make sure DNS zones are according to your needs and not needed ones have to be removed.

    hi Meinolf,

What I've done is started from scratch/the beginning - I've reinstalled the DNS service and removed the DC; the IP configuration data is posted above; youv'e mentioned that there is something wrong with my choice of domain names, is there some tutorial that  explains naming conventions in detail?
I'd like to post more data however, the Resource Kit isn't installing; in fact, the install fails with "Internal error 2237"; do you know how to fix that?

    Hi,

The reason we are asking you to post the results is that we want to make sure that the Domain Name and the corrosponding Zones are present. As per the IPCONFIG result posted above i am seeing that the Primary DNS Suffix is "JoeAbzekarianServer.MyNetDomain.com" while the MSDCS Zones are present with the name "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com''.
Again the First IPCONFIG result that you posted in this Thread had the DNS Suffix Name as "joeabzekerian.MyNetDomain.com"...... Can you explain that to us ?

You said you removed the DC\?? So what is the current Domain Name and how many DNS Servers are there in this Domain ?

i am not sure about the Resource Kit Error you are getting. You can install the Resource Kit on some different Server and then you can take Dcdiag and Netdiag remotely.

Please revert back with all the info.

    Thanks,
    Nitin

    Hi,

Yes i took a look at the other Thread where you posted the Resource Kit Installation issue :)

Ok so the Domain Name is --  JoeAbzekarianServer.MyNetDomain.com
                   Domain Controller Name  -- JoeAbzekarian

Allright so we have some problems here. Netlogon Test Failed and it could not locate KDC, Time Server and Global Catalog.

Did you verify if the Ports on the Server are open. This may be a problem with Ports. Make sure following Ports are open on the Server or Firewall.

    DNS 53
    Kerberos 88
    Time 123
    Global Catalog 3268
    Ldap 389
    SMB 443
    135 RPC

You can download 'Portqryui' from Microsoft website and use the GUI based snap-in to verify the Ports.

Also see which service is utilizing Ports by running 'Netstat -anob' on the Problem Server. If you see any Service (dns.exe) utilizing Ports till 65535 then it is a problem.
You can also check the Services and see if they are running.

Make sure Global Catalog Box is checked under Sites and Services.
Run Net Share and make sure Netlogon and Sysvol are shared.

Revert back with the results and Netdiag Output.

    Thanks,
    Nitin

    Hi,

Ok again DC Discovery, DC List and Ldap Tests are failing. Server dosen't seems to advertise itself as a DC.

Did you happen to check the things i mentioned earlier --

Run 'Net Share' (Sysvol and Netlogon should be shared)
Check 'User Account Control' value of the DC. It should be 532480
Run Nslookup and make sure you resolve to correct IP.
    Ping Domain Name
What about the Ports. Please make sure all the ports are open mentioned in my previous post.

    Revert back with the results.

     Answer
    hi,

    After reviewing this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315457
and following the instructions for rebuilding the missing shares, a few days later I noticed the netlogon and sysvol shares were listed with the other shares!

    Check out the results:

    Share name   Resource                        Remark

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    IPC$                                         Remote IPC
    H$           H:\                             Default share
    E$           E:\                             Default share
    C$           C:\                             Default share
    ADMIN$       E:\WINDOWS                      Remote Admin
    G$           G:\                             Default share
    NETLOGON     E:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\JoeAbzekarianServer.MyNetDomain.com\SCRIPTS
                                                 Logon server share
    SYSVOL       E:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol        Logon server share

    The command completed successfully.

As you can see, the net shares have appeared as if by magic, and the initial problem has cleared up also; so, thanks.

                                                                                                                   , Regards
