How can I fix Directory Services without starting safe mode?. About two weeks ago I got this message on my DC w2k3 server, " Security account manager installation failed because of the following error: Directory Service cannot start error status 0x00002e1..... press ok to reboot". Ok I know to fix the directory service I have to go into safe mode and select Directory restore mode. the problem I have is I get the message "c:\windows\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code 1073741819" and then terminate in 60 sec. Is there a way to fix the DS error, if not , now can I fix the safe mode error?
thank

Hi,
This machine sounds pretty sick. Have you tried booting to last known good configuration - this may fix the services.exe crash as it will restore registry settings back to the previous config. We have seen this combination of issues (services crashing with lsass crashing) mainly due to problems in anti-virus software. We have also seen the problem after a disk failure that corrupted critical system files. If this NOT your only domain controller, you may find it faster to re-install the operating system as a parallel install (i.e. install to a secondary windows directory), rescue any files off the server that you need, run a metadata cleanup on one of your existing domain controllers (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498), then format the server and reinstall it.
However, if this is your only DC, I would recommend you open a support case with us so that we can try some methods to diagnosis this server and rescue it intact. It will involve steps that are best worked through together on the phone rather than through this forum and would also likely require a debug for root cause analysis on services.exe if the problem turns out not to be disk corruption but instead a third party or malware injection.
