    Good day to all,

    i have one WIN2K3 AD DC and Exchange 2K3 install on it, i would like to migrate all to a new hardware and install WIN 2K8.

    i have perform a transitionning from WIN 2K3 AD to WIN 2K8.
    i have install a WIN 2K8 as secondary DC and promote it as additionnal DC to replace my WIN 2K3 DC. i wanted to transfer all the FSMO roles to the new WIN 2K8 DC but then when  tried to connect to the new server from which in the old one i get this message saying that the RPC server is not available.
    and when i opened the aactive directory domain and approbation to change the active directory domain controler it shows both the DCs and the first one is ONLINE but the new one is UNAVAILABLE..
    Beside that when i tried to access a shared folder on the new server i have this other  message saying that the network path cannot be found.

    PLese i need your assistance to solve this probleme before migrating my exchange 2K3 to 2K7 from the old one this new
    server

    Infact i think i've solved the problem. I had an error message stating AAAA record. after a diagnostics i found that the new server has 2 NIC and both have IPV6 activated. When i was promoting to DC both NICs were active and i had to reinstall the OS,install SP2, then disable one of the two NICs, disable IPV6 et voila. Now i have connected and transfered ALL the FSMO roles to the WIN2K8 srv. every thing is  working fine now .

    Now the next step is to demote de win2K3 srv and install Exchange 2007 on this new server and transfert users mail box. Any suggestions on how to go about it and proceed

    Start by ensuring that the firewall is disabled on both DCs. Next configure primary DNS server setting on both DCs such that they point to the Windows Server 2003-based DC (assuming you are using AD-integrated DNS) and restart Netlogon service.
    If this does not resolve the issue, review http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839880 and apply suggestions provided there...

    Thank you for your reply. i have applied the steps indicated in this article but still et status of the second DC still offline, and when i try to connect to the new DC from the old one i still get this message: "The following Domain controler can not be contacted:XXXX.mydomain.local. The RPC server is not available" or is offline. Please any other suggestions............

    Verify that Domain Name System (DNS) is available and functioning correctly and please post the unedited version of

    Ipconfig /all, Dcdiag /v and Netdiag.

    Hi Rabiou,

    DNS is still not fine in your environment. Please follow the steps mentioned below and get back with the results --

    > Check if you see both the Domain Controllers by running 'Netdom Query DC'
    > Since you have not transferred the Roles yet, the Role Holder should be Windows 2003 Server.
    > If DNS is installed on both the Servers than please point them to one another for dns. i.e Preferred DNS should contain own IP and Alternate DNS should contain the other Server's IP.
    > No Public IP's (ISP) should be specified in the Alternate DNS. If there, remove them and specify them in Forwarders TAB under DNS Snapin.
    > Ping Domain Name from both the Servers and make sure you get replies from either of the two Servers
    > Ping both the Servers from each other using FQDN and Netbios Names and make sure correct IP is resolved.
    > Run 'Netdiag' and 'Dcdiag /test:dns' to make sure all Tests are passed. Please also post the output here.

    > Next run 'Netstat -anob' and see if any Service is utilizing all the Ports on the Server.
    > Also see if you have FRS Events on the Server.

    Once you fix the DNS try restartig the DNS and Netlogon Services and see if you are able to connect to the Windows 2008 Server. As Marcin suggested, disable the Firewall if present.

    Revert back with the results.

    Hi Rabiou,

    Did you happen to run the Tests that i mentioned in last post. Are you able to Ping the DC's and Domain.
    What is the Nslookup Results ?
    Also does 'Netstat -anob' shows some Service eating the Ports ?

    Please revert back with the results.

    Infact i think i've solved the problem. I had an error message stating AAAA record. after a diagnostics i found that the new server has 2 NIC and both have IPV6 activated. When i was promoting to DC both NICs were active and i had to reinstall the OS,install SP2, then disable one of the two NICs, disable IPV6 et voila. Now i have connected and transfered ALL the FSMO roles to the WIN2K8 srv. every thing is  working fine now .

    Now the next step is to demote de win2K3 srv and install Exchange 2007 on this new server and transfert users mail box. Any suggestions on how to go about it and proceed

    Hi,

    Yes dual NIC's are not often recommended. Good to know that you found the resolution. I have also seen some issues wherein disabling the IPv6 fixes the issue, i wonder why though. Ideally it should failover to IPv4 which it even does, but still.
