Any known issues with adding a 2008R2 DC to a Win2008 domain?

Friday, May 04, 2012 1:56 PMHello MS Gurus, I am hoping to get an answer to my question. I have seen a lot of questions that are SIMILAR to mine but nothing that quite hits on what I am concerned with. We have a multi-domain, multi-homed forest with over 150,000 AD objects. The domain functional level is currently set to Windows 2008 but we recently had to replace a DC that failed. The old DC was Win2k8 and the new DC is 2k8R2. We know that the schema has to be modified and that has already been done. What we are concerned with is what impacts running ADPrep will have considering we are NOT ready to move to 2k8R2 Functional Level. Has anyone else performed this adprep without changing the functional level? If so, what results did you have? Please respond as soon as you can as we are at a barricade until we know for sure what this will do.

Hello,
There is no problem with that. Just make sure that your applications based on AD use supports working with your new 2008 R2 DC.

Hello,
this is working fine and fully supported from Microsoft. Be aware that replication will take a while until all DCs are updated, so assure this BEFORE promoting the new OS DC.

Saturday, May 05, 2012 6:03 AMThere is no known issue in preparing domain for Windows 2008 R2 with adprep in Win2008 domain. However I would recommend to take the backup of server before you proceed. You can raise the Forest and Domain Functional Levels to Win2008R2 if all the DC is Win2008R2 this should not be the issue unless and until you have lower version OS DC(like win2008/2003 etc).

Just for your info you can revert back or lower the Active Directory Forest and Domain Functional Levels in Windows Server 2008 R2.If you have not enabled AD recycle bin.

I have been part of numerous large organization where there is a mix of windows 2003/2008/2008 R2 is running without any major issue until you are running some legacy application which is not compatible with 64bit architecture or enhanced security in windows 2008 R2. Still, i have seen organization is rolling out windows 2008 R2 to utilize the major enhancements like.
