However, this query donn't belongs to this forum but i expect that i'll get the answer from anyone. Hence, I have posted the on WSUS forum as well..

what is difference between security update for windows server 2003x64 edition

and security update for windows server 2003 x64 edition. Also
security update for windows server 2008 R2 x64 edition and security update for

    windows server 2008.

And if i don't patch the x64 bit security update on x86 edition server then is

    it make any impact?

As per my knowledge, we can install patch on x64 edition server x86 editon

security updates but on x64 edition server cannot x86 edition security updates.

    Hello,

For updates, you will have x64 and x86 versions. Each version should be installed depending of the OS in use.

There is difference between x64 edition and x86 edtion hotfixes, depending upon the OS version you need to apply the same. However since you have WSUS Server in the environment, client will automatically pull patches(assuming WSUS policy is configured) from WSUS server, you just need to approve the patches from WSUS  server for both x64bit and 32bit OS, the rest will be taken care by wsus client automatically as WSUS server does not push patches, its client which will pull patches from WSUS server.

It is strongly recommend to install latest Service Pack and hotfixes on the server/worstation even if its is 64bit or 32bit for security reasons, fixing bugs, etc

    Hope this helps

    Thanks to you all..........

But my 1 more concern is here that x64 edition patches are shows in patch list in WSUS that

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) AND Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) x64 edition (KBXXXX) and same for Security Update for Windows Server 2008 (KBxxxx) AND Security Update for Windows Server 2008 (KBxxxx) x64 edition (KBXXXX).

My query is that this is only for Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) = 32 bit machine OS

And Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) x64 edition (KBXXXX) = 64 bit machine OS........... ? and if we push the only 32 bit machine OS to only 32 Bit machine OS patch on 64 bit machine OS then it will be applicable ??

You are correct 64bit/32bit will show in WSUS console. To clear your doubt click on the client in WSUS console you will see all the patches will be listed including 64/32 bit but if the Client OS verion is 32bit then 32bit hotfixed will be marked as install and other patches i.e 64bit and other patches which is not required will be marked as Not Applicable.Similary for 64bit OS client 32bit and other hotfixes which are not required will be marked as not applicable.

As mentioned previous WSUS server does push patches its the client which will pull patches form the server. So if the client OS version is 64bit it will pull the patches of 64bit and other patches which is required form WSUS server.Similary for 32bit OS client the process is same.

    Hi,

As Sandesh Said, it is very easy in managing via WSUS. It takes care of classifying the patches...

Even if you approve a X64 patch to group pf computers which are X86, the patch will not be downloaded to client computers reason being architecture is different.. It will show them as Not Applicable..

    Hi,

X86 Windows System and X64 Windows System has different system architect. So in most cases they have each own updates files depending on their version.

    > My query is that this is only for Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) = 32 bit machine OS
    > And Windows Server 2003 (KBxxxx) x64 edition (KBXXXX) = 64 bit machine OS........... ?

Yes, if it specify different update file version, these updates only available for each corresponding OS version.

Although you can install some X86 update on X64 OS in compatible mode, this just install the software, not fix the patch issue.

If an update is defined to support for both X86 and X64 versions, you can install it on both X64 and X86 systems.

    > and if we push the only 32 bit machine OS to only 32 Bit machine OS patch on 64 bit machine OS then it
    > will be applicable ??

No, and no need to do that. After you approve an update, WSUS will download both version update files. Then client contact WSUS to download and install updates depend on its OS version.
