AnswerIE8 admx-template including older settings?

    Hi,
I know that for publishing GPOs for IE8 with a non-R2 Server I need to copy the admx template. Does the new admx-file include all the old settings for IE7 and older versions? I need to make sure that my IE7 GPOs keep working if I change the admx file to test some IE8 GPO.

    regards,
    Michael

Just to clarify: Changing an ADM or ADMX file does not change the policy itself. These files are only templates for editing GPOs.
So you current GPO will just work as before.
What you have to keep in mind is, when changing template files, to ensure that you can still manage your old settings.
Because without the correct template, these settings will not show up in GPEDIT and therefore cannot be changed or removed
(note: GPMC Reporting will show these unresolved settings as "Extra Registry Settings").

In your specific case with IE7 and IE8 you can be quite sure that backwards compatibility is guaranteed.
I have not seen any missing items so far, only new stuff which of course is nice to have...

    Thanks.
I do know that changing the template does not change the policy. I wanted to make sure that I can actually see the old settings from a system with the new template.

    Hi Michael,

As Patrick explained, new IE8 ADMX file is compatible with old IE ADM/ADMX files.

Another choice is to use RSAT on non-IE8 client to manage GPOs If Central Store is not enabled.

    Thanks.
