I am using Group Policy Preferences to map drives.  This is fine when the users are at the office.  The problem is the mapping seem to be persistent and are causing issues for our mobile users.  I do not have the "Reconnect" box checked in the properties for the mapped drives' preferences.  The server OS is 2008 and the Laptop OS is Windows 7.

Are all drives mapped with Group Policy Preferences persistent or do I have things misconfigured.

    Thanks for your assistance.

    Hello Jm81,

In order to narrow down the issue, please confirm the following information:

       1. What mobile users do you refer to? For offline mobile users or mobile users who are by VPN connection?
       2. Do you want to resolve slow logon issue for offline mobile user or avoid transmitting data through slow VPN?

If you don’t want to enable mapping drive domain policy for your mobile users who are by VPN connection,  you could use Group Policy Preferences to map drive and remove drive for users based on their physical location, as shown in the following image.

Firstly, you create a delete action on the mapping drive targeting so that it will remove the mapping drive for mobile users.

Assuming that your company specifies IP range is 10.0.2.1 – 10.0.2.200, target and change it to an “Is Not” between "10.0.2.1" and "10.0.2.200"

I have a similar issue.  We have laptop users who when in the office get their mappings just fine but when the log off then log back on at home or off of our corp network the drive mappings are still showing in the network locations as disconnected.  This has caused some confusion with our users as I map drives based on location/IP.  Is there a way to get the drives to not be persistent on log in even when the reconnect box is not checked.
    "You can't fix stupid!"

You can try to select "Apply once and do not reapply" checkbox under "Common" Tab.

My problem is just the opposite. I've set up the Map Drives GPP, but it only applies on every other login. I have it set to Create and the Reconnect box is checked. On the Commnon Tab, I have it set to Run in logged-on user's security context, and Item-level targeting for the Site that the User is logging in from. Since User's can be in any office on any given day, I also have a logoff script to disconnect the drives when they log off. Help?

I'm having the exact same issue as the original poster and "jking363". I have windows 7 laptop users that are taking their machines home and when they login, the "Cannot reconnect mapped network drive" bubble and tray icon appear, because the drive map is trying to map.

If the user is not on the corporate network I'd like the network drive to simply not map, same as if you were running a batch file at login to map drives. If you were not on the same network as the DC then the batch file would not be available and no network drives would map.

Here's the settings I'm using for my drive map. I've also tried adding the "delete" action from the suggestions from above as another drive map in the policy, and wasn't able to get it to work.

    User Configuration (Enabled)
    Preferences
    Windows Settings
    Drive Maps
    Drive Map (Drive: P)
    P: (Order: 1)
    General
    Action Replace
    Properties
    Letter - P
    Location - \\server\share
    Reconnect - Disabled
    Use first available - Disabled
Hide/Show this drive - No change
Hide/Show all drives - No change

    Common
    Options
Stop processing items on this extension if an error occurs on this item - No
Run in logged-on user's security context (user policy option) - Yes
Remove this item when it is no longer applied - Yes

Any other suggestions or any input on exactly how you setup the directions explained above?
