QuestionDisabling offline files removes pinned items from Windows 7 task bar - Related to Folder Redirection GPO

    Hi,

This case was first raised in the Windows 7 support forum which soon became out of their boundary as we narrowed down the issue to a Folder Redirection GPO that I have setup with Windows 7.  In summary, if I Disable offline files on a domain joined machine the pin items on my Windows 7 task bar dissapear after a re-boot and next login.  I can then Re-enable offline files, re-start, login and whalla! my taskbar pin items re-appear.

I moved my machine into a blank Organisational Unit (i.e. no GPO's being applied) and re-tried the exercise and sure enough, I did not have the issue of my task bar pinned items dissappearing after disabling offline files.  I then added my suspect GPO which controls folder redirection for User's "My Documents" and User's Desktop to our File Server and was able to re-produce my initial problem of my taskbar pinned items dissapearing when disabling offline files in Windows 7.

Are you able to reproduce this? and explain why this is occuring.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Task Bar Pinned items are stored in the following location:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Please check the GPO to see if there is any policy related to this location. You could paste "gpresult /z" and GPMC result here for research.

    Thanks.

    Hi Mervyn,

I have narrowed down my issue to a single GPO that is controlling redirected My Documents and redirected Desktop.  As soon as I remove any re-direction, disabling Offline files does not affect pinned task bar items.

Are you able to replicate on your end?

    Hi,

I cannot reproduce this problem on my test environment. Please let us know the detailed configuration to test.

    Thanks.

    Hi Mervyn,

    I have a single OU in which I have moved a Windows 7 user into.  This OU only has one GPO applied with the following settings;

User Configuration / Windows Settings / Folder Redirection / Desktop
User Configuration / Windows Settings / Folder Redirection / Documents

These two folders are being redirected to a Windows 2008 R2 File Share. i.e. \\server\desktop and \\server\%username%\documents.

When a user log's in, their My Documents and Desktop is redirected to those 2 locations.  At this current time, I have yet to disable offline files and the user pinned taskbar items EXIST and are VISIBLE.

As soon as I disable offline files on the Windows 7 machine, re-start the computer, and login with the same user, the pinned taskbar items disappears.  The user is also using roaming profiles.

If i re-enable offline files on that computer, restart and login as the same user, their pinned taskbar items re-appear.

If you need further clarification, don't hesitate to ask but I am able to reproduce this with multiple machines and users.  I never had this issue with Windows Vista.

My problem does not occur with users who do not have any folder redirection applied.  I can comfortable disable offline files on their machines without them losing their pinned taskbar items.

    Cheers

hi George, i am unable to reproduce the issue mentioned by you with the configuration you mentioned.
enabling and disabling the offline settings did not trigger the issue you mentioned.
can you give more information like some screenshots?
