    Hi:

We are trying to enable FORMS in the AutoComplete Settings using the "If you do not configure this setting, the user has the freedom to turn on the auto-complete feature for forms" option in group policy, but the option to check the box to enable it is greyed out when users go into their Internet Settings.

I have done a resultant set on a user and computer and can't find this option enabled in any of our other policies. I have also tried playing with the following options without success:

    • Disable AutoComplete for forms
    • Turn on the auto-complete feature for user names and passwords
    • Turn off the auto-complete feature for web addresses

Am I missing something? GPRESULT shows that the user is receiving the policy.

    Thanks - Chris

Double check - it MUST be somewhere there.

NO THEY ARE NOT EVIL, if you know what you are doing: Good or bad GPOs?

Well, I just went through each of our policies and it is not enabled or disabled anywhere. Do you think there is a dependent policy preventing it from being selectable?

    Hi,

Regarding current issue, I suggest we could collect the following information to check what policy settings the user has received.

    GPMC.log

    ==================

    a. On domain controller, click Start ->Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console.

    b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic computer and user account (please place appropriately). (Choose computer and select the proper user in the wizard)

    c. Right click  the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML file.

Since you want to make users turn on the AutoComplete for forms, we could choose to disable the group policy setting. If we disable this setting, the user will be suggested possible matches when filling forms and they will not be able to change it.

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

Did you also check IE Maintenance settings?

@Andy - I did that and nothing shows in the resultant set for forms and AutoComplete. The only thing that is configured is "Use AutoComplete for users and passwords on forms". It is set to disabled.

@Martin - I checked IE Maintenance and found that only one policy had an Advanced option with the AutoComplete option and it is unchecked. I checked it and and it did turn on AutoComplete for forms, but did not give me the option to un-check it. Unfortunately, this will not work and we want it off by default and then give the users the ability to turn it on if they want (using the Not Configured option).

Could it be that because their are options configured here, it is conflicting with the other policies?

Since youi are using IE Maintenance Preference Mode, it "should" allow
your users to change it... I recommend dropping IE Maintenance
completely and use GPP Internet Settings instead ("apply once" checked
on the common tab, of course.)

Looking into this more, I am not going to be able to turn off preference mode as there are to many options configured within it. Just playing around with the settings seems to have impacted user because when I turned on "AutoComplete for forms" in preference mode, people started complaining about their internet options changing. Don't want to do that again.

So at this point, I am back to square one.

I just went back through and opened up each policy one by one. There is nothing conflicting. Anything else you think I can try?

    Thanks!

Okay, so I did a bunch of process and elimination and narrowed down the trouble policy. I then set all policies to "Not Configured" and still had the issue. The last thing I tried was to enable auto-complete for forms and auto-complete for username and password and then switched them back to "Not Configured" and that fixed it.

The only thing I can think is that the policy object on the DC was configured, but the GP snap-in was showing the incorrect information. Making a change to the policy forced it to update the server which I was able to correct by just setting everything back. The most painful part of all this was trying to determine which of the 20 policies was creating the problem.
