Proxy configuration no working in Windows 8
-
Friday, January 11, 2013 9:23 PMI created a GP to assign Proxy setting. For certain user I set the proxy server to 0.0.0.0 as the owner wants to restrict all access to internet, while for others internet is allowed. Using GP to turn off and on a bogus proxy address work great until Windows 8. The XP and windows 7 station obey but not Windows 8 and suggestions.

If you use IE Maintenance this will fail on Win8 - IEM is abandoned... Use GPP Internet Settings instead - or ADM Templates.
NO THEY ARE NOT EVIL, if you know what you are doing: Good or bad GPOs?

Actually you need to use Internet Explorer Administration Kit to set the Proxy. See this reference sheet on how to replace your Internet Explorer Maintenance settings.

internetSorry Richard, but can we please stop this stupid an silly solution to manage Internet Access? This is, has never been and will never be a functional way to control internet.
All you want is a Proxy with User Authentication. Every actual Proxy Solution, even the freeware one, are today able to read your AD Security groups to control Internet.
With your GPO, you can only manage in a poor way the Internet Explorer.
What about: FireFox, Chrome, Safari, Opera
What about alle the Browsers comming as Portable Apps, or tools etc?I really hate the idea of given a wrong proxy, compared to the simple handling of using a real proxy.
- Squid on Win32
- Squid in mostly every Free Firewall Distribution like: IPCop, monowall, pfsense, providing an easy to handle Webfrontend
- Jana ServerThey are all free and the best thing is: This will work with every Browser you provide. USER AUTHENTICATION!
Despite of this:
IEM - Internet Explorer Maintainance is, as Martin mentioned, no longer available in Windows Server 2012. But you can propagate the Proxy Server settings with Group Policy Preferences Internt ExplorerOnly the "Automatic search for ..." checkbox is not available, because it´s inside a huge Binary Blob. If you want to check/uncheck this Checkbox, you can deploy it with GPP Registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections
"DefaultConnectionSettings"Export the complete Binary twice .. one time checked, on time unchecked.
