I am using Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Domain Controller and running on XP SP3 client PC's.
My colleagues has complained to me that they are shutting down the computers every day when they go home. but it is already on for login screen when they come to office next day. Looks like the computers starting itself after 10 - 20 minutes.
I haven't done anything in the Domain Controller / Group policy. but i am installing all the critical updates using WSUS.
Does anyone knows what could be the issue?
Is there any setting can be changed in the Group policy level to fix it?
Thank you
Shaheed

Hi,
a few thoughts..
it could be a scheduled task causing scheduled wake-up?
or the colleagues are choosing "restart" instead of "shutdown"?
is anybody physically turning off the computers, or the power feed to the computers?
is there a disruption in the power?
is somebody turning the computers, or the main circuit to them, back on?
are the computers configured to auto-start if power is removed & then applied at mains outlet?
are there any network services such as Wake-On-LAN (WoL) is use in your network?
is there any computer management software agents installed which could trigger a power-on event?
are you using any power-management software (which is likely designed to save power) but it is mis-configured?have you observed this with your own eyes? sometimes people play tricks on us IT people :)

I would suggest checking the system eventlog entries to see when the machines are started.
If the (re)start is as you say not immediate then you might have to check for remote wake events (WoL) or scheduled tasks..
XP does not support Powermanagement wake for WU like Vista/Win7 does, so most likely there's an external cause.
