Folks,
I have a virtual server that was built with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, that I have imported and created a new server. When I go to activate my Windows key (Server 2008 R2 standard), it tells me I must supply a Enterprise key. This server is not currently licensed at all, as we did a sysprep and wiped the licenses on it. How can I get to activate my Server 2008 R2 standard key on this box?

You cannot do that. If the OS installed was Enterprise edition, you must supply an Enterprise key. If you want to use Standard key, you must reinstall the Standard edition.- Proposed As Answer by Dave PatrickMVP Friday, April 20, 2012 2:26 AM

Hi,
I have to say that the specific OS should have specific license.

I figured that was going to be the response, but wanted to double check. So, if I have to reinstall the Standard edition...I will lose all of my IIS configurations, and all the installed applications I have on the virtual server, right? I'll essentially be starting from scratch to build from the ground up again?
