How to configure SNMP on Windows 2008 Server
- I have installed SNMP on 2008 server (Standard x64 w/GUI), now I need to configure the Agent, Traps, and Security. In Windows 2003 you just opened the SNMP Service properties and configured those settings using the Agent, Traps, and Security tabs. When I tried the same method on Windows 2008 Server those tabs are missing.
Where do I need to go to change the settings? I have seen a few posts that talk about using regedit to make changes. If that is the case why was this simple functionality removed?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

- Hi,
For the configuration SNMP on windows server 2008, you can refer to the following articles:
Simple Network Management Protocol
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb726987.aspx
TCP/IP Fundamentals for Microsoft Windows
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c76296fd-61c9-4079-a0bb-582bca4a846f&displaylang=en

- Morgan,
Thanks for the reply, I just got around to trying your suggestions and low and behold that the tabs are now available. It seems the issue is when you first install the SNMP "feature" it does not update the administrative snap-in's, specifically the Server Manager, and/or services. Once the server has been rebooted, then the tabs show up under the SNMP services properties. At that point it works the same as a Windows 2003 server.
I haven't had the time to see if just exiting server manager and opening server manager fixes the problem. Possibly a log out / login might fix the problem, but I don't currently have the time to replicate the issue. When I load my next server I will give a go to see if it is just that simple or if infact a reboot is necessary.
Thanks,

- Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how either of those articles answers the original question. The first one talks about SNMP on a Windows 2003 server and the second one doesn't seem to reference SNMP at all.

- I just tried exiting server manager hitting F5 once or twice to refresh the screen and opening server manager again and the missing Tabs appeared...no reboot necessary.

- Is there a way to configure SNMP using a command line or powershell? I'm trying to automate the deployment/configuration using MDT so I need to write a script.
Juraj - Exiting server manager did the trick. Thx tgo. Wow....Uncle Bill, you need to do better than than!
- Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that closing the services MMC and reopening it again rendered the Agent, trap and securtity tabs visible again. Now I can configure the service.
Strange but true
Best Regards, - You can add the SNMP service through the Add Features wizard in Server Manager.
