Setting default global settings for applications?
- I hope I have posted this question in the correct place... But my question is about setting default global settings.
So I have a network using Windows Server 2003 and computers running Windows XP SP3. I was wondering if it was possible to set default global settings for an application such as Microsoft Word and apply those settings to all new accounts and pre-existing ones. Is this possible? If so, can anyone point me out to what I need to do?
Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

Hi,
Thanks for the update.
Yes, it seems the GPO with customized Office Word settings is not applied onto the client. There are two GPOs named "Programming" and "Networking" that is linked on the XXX.com/both OU applied onto the client.
1. What is the name of the GPO with customized Office Word settings?
2. Which OU do you link the GPO to in the domain? Please understand that when you open the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), the local computer policy is presented instead of the domain GPO. In the other word, if you need to distribute setting over domain you will need to create a domain GPO on the DC instead of the computer local policy.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Hello,
Thank you for your post here.
What is the default global settings that you mean?
For those settings in Microsoft Office system Administrative Template files, you may install those ADM/ADMX on the DC and configure those settings and distribute them to all domain clients.

- Oh, sorry, forgot to mention the setting it was I was wanting to change. In Microsoft Word, under Tools and then Options, I wanted to change those settings and apply them across all accounts on the network.

In Microsoft Office 2003 policy template, there is a bunch of Option settings for Word 2003. You may install the ADM files and check whether those settings can fulfill your management requirement.

- Great, thanks! I think this ought to do it. I will check it out and see how it works.
- Hello again.. I successfully figured out how to install and use the ORK. I used the Group Policy Editor, added Microsoft Office 2003 Word ADM file, and modified the settings to what I wanted to have applied to all users, however, no users (new or old) get those settings applied to Word.
Have any ideas of what might be going wrong?
Thanks for your help, much appreciated! Hi,
Thanks for the update.
To identify whether the group policy is applied onto the client properly, you may collect the Group Policy Result from the DC.
a) On the DC, process the Group Policy Result wizard to collect the data of RSOP in GPMC.
b) Right click Group Policy Results---> Group Policy Results Wizard…
c) Choose Another computer to point to the problematic client.
d) Select that problematic user account and click next to collect the group policy result data.
In the Summary tab, verify the Applied Group Policies to make sure the GPO with Word settings is listed. If the GPO is not listed, it indicates that the GPO is filtered out for some reason. Please double check the GPO settings such (enforcement, security filters and etc) that may prevent the GPO from applying. You can also output the GPO and send to me at v-mileli@microsoft.com for further investigation.

- Hi,
Thank you very much for your help... I guess I just did something a little dumb which was quite obvious... I was applying those settings to the server, not the users. I just needed to go into GPMC, right click the group I wanted to have settings set for, Edit then apply the Admin Template to it.
Thanks again. Your help was much appreciated! Hi,
I am glad to know everything is working now. If you have any questions or concerns about Windows Server in the future, please do not hesitate to let us know. Thanks.
