Answermsg.exe errors

I've Googled and Binged... and I don't seem to find more than general information on this utility.

Can someone explain what "Error 5 getting session names" and "Error 1722 getting session names" mean?

On top of that, what is a session name and session id for msg.exe?

    Thank you.

    Hi,

The return code of msg.exe: “Error 1722 getting session names”. This may be because something is blocking network traffic, please ping the target to check if there is a respond.

for more meaning of msg.exe, please run "msg.exe /?" in command line.

    Hope it helps.

Yes, the /? helps but not with the error messages. I tried pinging and I reached the machine (0% loss).

    Still, a no-go.

    This shouldn't be so difficult...

I can also RDP, share and access files... why is this utility included but then literally no support for it.. oh wait, it's a Microsoft product and I didn't pay for the certification.

     Answer

Error code 5 is standard error code for 'access is denied'
Error code 1722 means 'The RPC server is unavailable.'

If firewall is enabled, see following article

Is Messenger service running on the machine?
