    Hi All,

We have a Windows2003 R2 (32bit) domain controller that holds 4 of the 5 FSMO roles, as well as DHCP and DNS.  We will be migrating our domain to Windows2008 soon and I have started to build a baseline, but i'm still a little confused how to complete this baseline. The one task that has me confused is the DHCP migration and how to keep the same ip address for the Windows2008 domain controller (this is important, because all of our edge switches and core infrastructure points to this ip address for various reasons).  Here is what I know I need to do in preparation for the migration:

    * prepare the forest and schema for windows2008

    * transfer all fsmo roles to another domain controller

    * change primary dns ip to the other domain controller (we have 2 domain controllers that have dns active directory integrated)\

    * (DHCP Migration)Here is where my confusion starts. I understand I think how to do the DHCP migration, but i'm not sure if I should first DCPROMO the 2003 DC and remove from Active Directory and change the ip address, then change the windows2008 DC and make the ip address the same as the windows2003, run DC PROMO and promote the Windows2008 member server to a DC, then do the DHCP migration?

    * (OR) - (Fill in the blanks) - This is where I do not know.  I've researched all these articles and i'm still unsure at what point I should do the migration (with the Windows2003 server as a Domain Controller or Member Server) and at what point I can change the ip address of the source windows2008 server:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/7411.step-by-step-migration-dhcp-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2008-r2-with-windows-server-migration-tools.aspx

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Search/en-US?query=dhcp%20migration&ac=8

    - I would greatly appreciate any guidance.  I'm sure there must be other people out there that have been in this same boat and need to keep the same ip address on the Windows2008 domain controllers.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Take a valid backup of DHCP with the netsh

netsh dhcp server export C:\dhcp.txt all (keep dhcp.txt in a safe place)

Remove an old DC and Introduce a new DC with the Same Name and IP Address-Ace Fecay(MVP)

    DHCP Migration

netsh dhcp server export C:\dhcp.txt all
netsh dhcp server import C:\dhcp.txt all

Below event should be appear into the new server after completeing the DHCP server.

(Event has been copied from my test lab:-)

    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: DhcpServer
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1044
    Date: 1/20/2011
    Time: 1:18:18 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: RUMOR
    Description:
The DHCP/BINL service on the local machine, belonging to the Windows Administrative domain services.corp.contoso.com, has determined that it is authorized to start. It is servicing clients now.

Above event is applicable for 2003 and 2008 as well .... .

1.In addition after promoting the new DC First install the DHCP server service then
authorize that with enterprise Admin rights.

    2.import the dhcp.txt

-Thanks for the reply.  I do have that article as part of my baseline. In our situation, the export/import would not be advisable (going from a 32bit windows2003 DC to a windows2008 64bit). I know that I need to do the migration process.  This article is great, but the only DHCP notes here relate to import/export and nothing about the DHCP migration process (see my links in original email).

    (Question)

    - Do I migrate the DHCP scopes from the windows2003 server when this server is still a Domain Controller and the Windows2008 member server? Then demote the Windows2003 DC and promote the Windows2008 member server (with DHCP installed/migrated)?

You can migrate the dhcp(export/import via netsh) any server any time.( That can be any server; DC , member server not an issue).

Export that first and keep that in safe place. Import anytime any server.Just join in domain.

From what i've read, going from a 32bit (Windows2003) to a 64BIT (Windows2008) there could be some errors and it's possibe some settings would not get copied over.  Therefore, i'm confident the best method is the migration method. The only questions I have is when I should do the migration process (do I keep the Windows2008 a member server while I do the migration before demoting the Windows2003 DC)

you can run adprep on 64 bit platform(DC) for preparing the schema or run adprep32 on 32 bit platform(DC) for preparing the schema.

    Transitioning a Windows 2003 Domain to Windows 2008 R2 or 2008
