    I was in the process of migrating my windows 2003 r2 server to a 2008 r2 server.  I was following technet steps for the server migration.  However the issue I have run into is rather weird.  It seemsd to be 2 part and related.

    First I changed the name of the server before transfering the FSMO roles, now that I am trying to transfer them,  when I try to transfer the active directory operation master it still references the 2003 server name. so i can not transfer the roles.

    Secondly when I try to change the server name back or try to rename the 2008 server with the same name i get an error;

    The following error occurred validating the name "examplename".

    You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network.

    now when I go to see my network somehow a shared drive on the 2003 server has held that name for just 3 folders inside it.  I can't seem to see 2 of the folders on the host machine only on a remote machine.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
