    I am migrating 2003 AD to 2008 R2

Everything is fine except for WINS

The 2008 DC will hold the same roles and the 2003 used to do

    Role                        Status

    All FSMO                working

    DHCP                      working

    DNS                        working

    DFS                         working

WINS                      the below error appears when I try to restore the wins data I backed up from the 2003 DC

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine RegOpenKeyExW(-2147483646,SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS\Diag,...).  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.

    Operation:

       Initializing Writer

    Context:

       Writer Class Id: {f08c1483-8407-4a26-8c26-6c267a629741}

       Writer Name: WINS Jet Writer

    Hello,

detailed steps how to change the registry key permissions are in the comment part from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264196(v=ws.10).aspx#5

And do NOT forget to have backup before modifying the registry.

thank you i did the steps and add the local service account as found in the event log and give it full control over VSS directory

see i thought this was why i am not able to restore WINS from 2003 domain controller, but it looks like this is not the reason or maybe not the only one

for today the error did not come again but still whenever i try yo restore wins DB that i backed up from 2003 domain controller to my new 2008 DC

wins encountered an error wail processing the command error pops up

i choose the folder containing the wins DB that and i also choose the partition it self

    but same error

    Hi,

    Thank you for the post.

    Based on KB875419, migrating WINS database file from 32 bit(Windows 2003) to 64 bit(Windows 2008 R2) is not supported.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875419/en-us

The workaround way is configure Windows 2008 R2 as WINS replication partner and get the records from Windows 2003 WINS server, then use netsh command to change the ownership of the record. Or change the DHCP option 046 point to both server, then change option to only new server after some days.

    thank you

regarding the migration solution i have some doubts

    1. i have already decommissioned the old DC "2003"

    2. the answer in the link is not so clear - is he doing these changes on the old dhcp/wins server or new, and do we need to add the new server as a replication partner, also i think there is a mistake in the DHCP scope option number 046 i think it should be 044 in 2008

    3. after decommissioning the old DC i changed its name but in wins it is still the old name

    4. do i need to add the wins server ip on each server in the tcp/ip config i.e. in 123.234.180.57 to need to add this server ip in the wins tcp/ip

i already added the old server as a replication partner from the wins console in windows 2008 R2 dc

    Hi,

    2. Yes, it should be 044 scope option.
    4. Yes, you need to add wins server ip if your each server set to static ip address. Another workaround is to change the new WINS server ip to the old WINS server ip. In this case,  you will no need to change of WINS settings of NIC or DHCP scope option.

ok i did follow the steps but still i can see the old server is the owner for many records, looks like it is going to take long

see i removed the old dc from the wins dhcp settings and i wanted to ask can i stop wins on the old decommissioned dc better

and the new one will take it from there - it is the owner for about 25% of the records now

    Hi,

Okay, you may perform procedure below to change the WINS records ownership (include static and dynamic) and then stop the old DC WINS service.

Procedure to migrate static WINS records from WINS 2003 to WINS 2008

1.Create file called lmhost with all static records IP and hostnames
2.Go to server 2003 (who will NOT hold ownership of records) and select check box – “overwrite unique static mappings at this server (migrate on)”
WINS MMC--right click replication partners--properties--General tab
3.Copy lmhost file to server 2008 which will hold ownership of the records – import LMHOST records on WINS database
WINS MMC--right click active registration--“Import LMHOST file”--provide the path for it--it should tell you “the static mappings file has been successfully imported into the database”
4.It will change ownership of the records to current server 2008 box.
5.Force replication between WINS servers – manual force will only queue the request but restarting WINS server service will do it immediately.

    Rick,

I would like to keep the same IP for the new WINS 2k8R2.

Can I simply pull (replicate the data from old WINS) from the partner and after couple of days, move the "old IP" to the new server?

You are mentioned about changing the ownership of the WINS records. Please advise.
