Windows 2003 upgrade to Windows 2008R2/2012
-
Wednesday, December 05, 2012 1:15 PMHi we are running windows server Enterprise 2003 64bit in a 2 node SAN cluster with exchange 2003 installed on each node and the database shared on the SAN for redundancy. We have also a seperate Windows 2003 standard domain controller running AD, DHCP and DNS.
We are looking to upgrade these servers to either Windows server 2008R2 or 2012.
Which OS would you recommend?
Do we need to reconfigure the SAN afterwards?
Do we need to update the Exchange 2003 before updating the servers?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
Exchange 2010 SP2 is not supported on Windows Server 2012 and Exchange 2003 is not supported in either Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2008.
So if we plan to upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, we will need to install Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008.
If we plan to upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012, Exchange 2013 is needed.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the reply, would you upgrade exchange to 2010 first then upgrade windows server to 2008R2 after in that order?
How do we get hold of the upgrade software?
Regards
Adam

We are looking to upgrade these servers to either Windows server 2008R2 or 2012.
Which OS would you recommend? What is always recommended is the highest OS which is Windows Server 2012. However, you have to make sure that SAN an other needed drivers are available for the OS to choose before proceeding. More details if you contact your vendor technical support for assistance.
Do we need to reconfigure the SAN afterwards?
Ask your SAN constructor technical support for details about the firmware and the possible required updates.
Do we need to update the Exchange 2003 before updating the servers?
You have to identify all the dependencies. As an example, you cannot have Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 DCs with Exchange Server 2003. Exchange should be upgraded before in this case.
