Hi all
I have 2 separate domains at a school a admin network and a curriculum network. Both on separate ip range, one 10.12.106.0 and one 10.12.108.0
the admin network has subnet mnask of 255.255.255.0 and is now nearly full of ip address.
in long term i was thinking to merge both network.
before merging i wondered if i can just have one ip address range for both networks? would that be possible?
We have to request subnets from our local authority and they confiugure our router for us. Therefore i was hoping to get this done in one go and not have to ask for another ip range and reconfiguring after, when i merge it.
Or would it just be easy to merge the network in one go? we are based in 2 sites and one site will close in may and thats when i was hoping to do merge network.
we have maxed out on ip addresses at present. let me have you views if we can have one ip range throughout.
thanks

Hello,
using a single subnet for multiple domains, require that at least all machines in one domain use ONLY fixed ip addresses. If you use DHCP you cannot devide the leases and scope settings as DNS server(which is the important one to connect to the correct DC for authentication).

I agree with Meinolf. If consolidating the two at one location, I would also suggest to keep them separated by creating separate subnets with a router between the two subnets, for each domain. The best and easiest way is to take advantage of VLANs using a Layer3 switch. Otherwise, there are certain problems that you will encounter, such as what Meinolf indicated with DNS.
If you want to consolidate them on the same subnet, then you will have to setup DNS so that whether you use either DNS server from either domain, that they have a reference to the other DNS server. One way to do it is with Secondary zones of the one on the other and vice versa. Another way is to use COnditional Fowarding between the two for each others' zones. Then you will want to add Search Suffixes to each other in order to resolve each other.
The easiest way is just to VLAN them.
