AnswerIssues with IP virtualization

    Hi,

We have been trying to test out the new virtual IP feature in Win2k8 R2 without any success.  I am hoping to get some guidance.  Following are the steps we followed to get remote desktop services running.

One note worth mentioning is, we are using a non-server platform with only one NIC - Broadcom NeTXtreme 57xx controller (basically a Dell laptop) as our test box.

    A)  Installed the operating system and all patches
    B)  Turned on remote desktop services (we did not configure any licensing mode).  At this point, we only enabled on the session host server.  Note:  We also turned on Desktop Experience feature.
    C)  Went into Remote Host session host configuration and enabled IP Virtualization, select the NIC and the session-based mode.  For this POC, we want to get the session IP addresses from our DHCP server.
    D)  Connected to terminal services and issued the ipconfig command from a command prompt that is launched with administrator privileges.  We were expecting to see two IP addressess assigned - one for the NIC and one for the session.  But, no.  The output showed only one IP being assigned.

We haven't sniffed the wire yet to see if there is any DHCP traffic going out and into the box when there is a new rdp session.  We will examine the traffic but I am suspecting that there is something very fundemental that we missed.
There were no entries in the event viewer pertaining to remote desktop services.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

IP Virtulation is only supported if you install the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role. Just enable remote connections will not enable IP Virtualization. Also, if you are using "mstsc /admin" to connect to the server, you will not get IP Virtulation.

    Thanks!

Remote Desktop services is indeed turned on.  And no, we are not using mstsc /admin.  The logs specific to Terminal Services VIP show that the service is enabled.  However, there were no operational logs despite enabling this logging feature.

okay, Windows 2008 R2 has IPV6 enabled by default.  I thought by checking IPV6 off in network properties, the OS would disable all associated IPV6 adapters.  Apparently, it doesn't work that way.  You have to tweak your registry settings to disable these IPV6 adapters.  I found this article which explained how to do it.  Once all IPv6 adapters are disabled, IP virtualization started working.
