Where can I recover my lost CALs for Terminal Server
Where can I recover my lost CALs for Terminal Server
- Our company has lost its 20 or so CALs for Terminal Server that were purchased back in 2006. We cannot find any receipt or invoice either. Our guess is that this info was lost somehow when we moved offices back in '07. It was suggested to me that since the licenses are required to be 'activated' with MicroSoft, that I should be able to log into a MLA account somewhere and retrieve them. Can someone please point me in the right direction of who to talk to about this?

- Recovering client access licenses on a Terminal Server license server

Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse telephone number for your country or region

This is your best bet, but if the Clearinghouse doesn't have enough information to find the license pack information then you may not be able to recover them.

- I do not believe MS keeps track of end user licenses like that. That is the responsibility of the companies buying the licenses.

- Thank you for your reply. I am having a hard time with the directions. Terminal Services is running, but when I start the Licensing application is says that it cannot connect to a Terminal Server.
- I assume that the error message that you get is that the Licensing Manager application (presumably started from the Terminal server) isn't able to connect to a Terminal Server *Licensing* Server?Does that mean that you not only lost your licenses, but you lost the whole Licensing Server? Do you have a backup of the old Licensing Server's database? If so, you can restore it to a new server, get the LS ID and call the Clearinghouse. You could also try to contact the original vendor where you bought the licenses, they usually keep records of sold licenses.Read this as well:Migrating a Windows Server 2003 TS License Server

. - The server's hard drive was replaced and no backup was made of the license database. I contacted the vendors that the company used at the time and no one has a record of it. Their suggestion was to contact Microsoft to see if the CALs can be located in a CAL Activation Account of some kind. I guess I will have to re-purchase the CALs, as the paperwork was lost in the move. Thank you for your time.
- I think if you can document it with purchase orders from your accounting you will be fine.
Citrix Technology Professional, PubForum.net Founder , Love Microsoft &its people to bits! - Except for the little problem that the company never used PO #s and we're on a different accounting system. I can only guess at the vendors, and the ones I called so far don't have any record of it.Thanks, anyway.
- Update: I purchased another pack of CALs after giving up in finding the old ones. Once I went to the eOpen website to activate the new CALs, I located my old ones! I was able to re-activate the old ones and get my money back on the new ones. All's well that ends well, but it was a bit frustrating that I had to go to that extreme to recover them.Regards,Paul
