We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RDS supporting many ThinClients, mostly using a mandatory profile on a Windows 2003 R2 AD environment
at the moment of the hang what we experienced was:
New RDP sessions got stucked in the legend "Iniciando" (we have the spanish MUI).
Systems Events shows a lot of Warnings:
The Group Policy Client Side Extension Group Policy Shortcuts may have caused the Group Policy Service to terminate unexpectedly. To prevent further failures in the Group Policy Service, this extension has been temporarily disabled until after the next system restart. Group Policy settings managed by this extension may no longer be enforced until the system is restarted. The vendor of this extension should be contacted if this issue recurs.
and after that a lot of this errors:
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CryptSvc service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service.
The RDP protocol component X.224 detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the gpsvc service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the BITS service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SessionEnv service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CertPropSvc service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the IKEEXT service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the iphlpsvc service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the SessionEnv service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the iphlpsvc service.
During the problem we ping DC and Network Share where Profile and Document Redirection resides and they were working OK (we also did a \\server\HomeUsers and we reached it without problem)
Only reseting the server worked, Any Ideas of what could be causing this ?? Best Regards

1. Your using Sun Ray, that explains most things :)
2. More importantly.... There was a patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2653956/ that managed to hang our 2003R2 servers (running citrix) Look under known issues on the article, hotfix available.
check the article to see if your symptoms match

Hi Lesta, thanks for the response
We're using Sun RAy think clients, WYSE TC and also RDP connections from windows clients. I will apply this hotfix on our Win2k8 R2 SP1 RDS server.

Hi Clarence,
We applied /kb/2653956/ for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 recommended by Lesta, and now we'are waiting to see if the issue appears again.
What I see is a lot of Warnings in System Events EVENTID 1128
"The Group Policy Client Side Extension %3 may have caused the Group Policy Service to terminate unexpectedly. To prevent further failures in the Group Policy Service, this extension has been temporarily disabled until after the next system restart. Group Policy settings managed by this extension may no longer be enforced until the system is restarted. The vendor of this extension should be contacted if this issue reoccurs."
We're using folder redirection, but I'm not sure if this client side extensions warnings could be causing the hang??
Best Regards,
Fed.-

Tuesday, June 26, 2012 9:50 AMModeratorI don't think that the folder redirection will lead to the hang. Most likely 3rd party application is the root cause.Let's wait to see whether the patch works or not.

Hi Clarence,
Today we experienced the problem again,
Users can’t login to RDS, but now they got stucked at “"Please wait for the Group Policy client”;
System log events recorded the following errors again:
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the sessionenv service.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Wuauserv service.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the BITS service.
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CertPropSvc service.
What path do you suggest to investigate further?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Clarence,
I had a similar problem today with a client's server. They are using Server 2008 SP1 32-bit and the software being used is Go-Global 4 Cluster Manager. This company's clients were having problems connecting and the techs involved couldn't connect via RDP until after a server reboot.
Kind regards,
Orion

Wednesday, July 04, 2012 1:47 PMWe also had the same issue today on multiple Windows 2008 R2 servers, one of them a RDS server, one a vcenter and the other running some web software. Only similarities I can draw is that they all have SQL 2008 installed. Hard reboots resolved the issue as well.

Wednesday, July 04, 2012 11:49 PMI would create a temp user that does not have any group policy applied, if you have another server I would recommend you would try to use that one for this test. If the issue is resolved by disabling the group policy I would then try figuring out what policy could be doing this.

i agree with Geekman, since you mentioned that this hang issue occurs when start the new RDP session. Meanwhile, we need to try to logon the physical console to check if any obvious CUP/Memory high usage process there. All the service timeout events occurs means they are all hosted on SVCHOST.EXE, that that time, this process is no response due to the server hang.
Also, does a hard reboot is necessary to recover this issue? Or this issue will go away by itself?
Usually, hang issue just occurs due to the resource leak, high resource usage peak, or the deadlock.

Hi Kevin, Sorry for the late response. I'm still working on this issue, last week we submitted the incident to MSFT support. Now we are working with a support engineer looking for causes to this issue.
I'll keep you up to date

Friday, July 27, 2012 2:13 PMSame problem here. We are using Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with XenApp 6.0 HF1 since march 2012. No problems with timeout on services. In june 2012 the timeout on services (A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CryptSvc service and A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service). On the internet there a lot of discussions about this issue and patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2465772 should solve the problem. This patch was installed on our Citrix servers on 19-11-2011. On 23 may 2012 patch KB2688338 (MS12-032) was installed. In this patch there's a new tcpip.sys file (version 6.1.7601.21954). Patch KB2465772 contains also the tcpip.sys file with version 6.1.7601.21642. So, I thin k that the problem is in tcpip.sys. Once it was fixed and now its broken again ?

Hi Frederico,
Did you have any luck with these patches? I'm struggling with that problem since ~1year and so far all patches and fixes did not work in the long term. (W2K8 R2 SP1, XA 6.5 with patches 001/025)
Thanks
Uli

Hi uli, sorry for the late response.
I have a support case still open with MSFT regarding this issue, it looks like a 3er party driver or app is causing the hang. Msft support scalation enginner didn't found the cause yet. The server is prepared to take a dump when the problem happens again.

We are having a very similar issue across 18 terminal servers in a broker environment using 2008 Server R2. Mostly Wyse clients connecting and folder redirection combined with roaming profiles (not much roaming).
It started with a timeout on: ShellHWDetection
And then all the rest of these followed within 30 seconds with a "terminated unexpectedly" error:
Application Experience
Application Information
Application Management
BITS
Certificate Propagation
Group Policy Client
IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
IP Helper
Server
Mulitple Class Scheduler
User Profile
Task Scheduler
System Event Notification Service
Remote Desktop Configuration
Shell Hardware Detection
Themes
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Update

Hi we are having a similar problem.
We are running citrix 6.5 on Windows 2008 R2 and sometimes we can't logon anymore... We are getting an error that the logon keeps trying...
in the eventviewer there are 2 services the are having a time out.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the NlaSvc service
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the CryptSvc service.
and always those two, the only solution we have at the moment is a reboot...If anybody found a solution I'm keen on having it also ;-) -
Tuesday, November 27, 2012 7:40 PM
We have the same issue and it is always just those two services. What we have found instead of restarting the server that has worked for us is to restart the Citrix IMA service. We also have to restart Citrix Smart Card service since we use smart cards but this trick has worked for us.
We can even duplicate this on a VM server with just basic setup not 3rd party drivers or software. Very frustrating and has caused us to not fully migrate to 6.5

I have the same issue with Citrix XenApp 6.5
In the system event log I a load of messages such as the below;
A timeout (30000 millisecon
ds) was reached while waiting for a transactio n response from the NlaSvc service.
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transactio n response from the CryptSvc service. I have raised this on the Citrix Forum,

We had applied pretty much every hotfix that seems applicable to 2008 r2 and it didn't resolve anything. We applied all the hotfixes out of Citrix and the problem was still encountered.
While it didn't appear to be a memory starvation issue entirely (Memory didn't pass 80-85%), we upped each box by 4 GB ram and the problems have disappeared for us.

Our problem was solved with a Limited Release Patch from Citrix
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX136295
We have not had a single problem (for us) in the past three weeks.
