AnswerTerminal Server 2008 with Office 2003 Menu ghosting problem

We have just built a new Terminal Server 2008 and installed Office2003 onto it for  client and we observer a behaviour of the office menu's leaving ghosted trails on screen if you slide from one drop down menu to another as you go across the menu bar.  It is part of the menu outline 'outer glow or shadow' that is not being cleared, either part of a side or base.

The Server is fully up to date as is the Office in terms of service packs.   If you dismiss a menu and then select the next one it is fine, only when you drop a menu down and then slide across to the next one.

We observe the same problem on anoyther site where Office2002(XP) is installed.  If you change to 256 colours the problem goes away, but that is not acceptable to the users.  It is as though there is a screen painting problem.  My colleague says it does not occur on the console though.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Hello Alan,

I did a series of tests in my environment, based on your description. The issue can be reproduced.

On the basis of the test results, the problem is very possibly caused by the visual and display configurations on the Remote Desktop Connections. If the configurations related to the visual effect cannot support the animated and shadow-style menu in Office 2003 completely, the shadow tail issue will occur.

To fix this issue, the following two conditions are required:

    ·          The network speed and bandwidth is quick enough to support the visual effect;

    ·          At least the following options are checked in the Remote Desktop Connection software:

o    Display tab - Colors: Highest Quality (32 bit).

o    Experience tab – Performance: Desktop composition; Visual Styles.

Note: My test client is using Windows 7 with RDP 7.0 supported. If the issue cannot be resolved by the conditions above, please upgrade your RDC client to RDP 7.0 supported versions.

Please let us know the result if possible. Thanks.

    Regards,

    Hi,

You can try to disable the visual effects (if you have the Desktop Experience feature installed)

My computer properties -> Performance information and tools -> Adjust visual effects ->
    set to best performance.

My colleague has tried that but sadly it has not worked.  Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Hello Lionel,

Thank you for your help, I am Alan's colleague who is setting up the 2008 terminal server (it's 2008 Standard 64bit - not R2).

I've tried what you suggest using Windows 7 and RDP 7.0 over a 100Mbps network connection, but the phenomenon of the menu outlines remains.

The content of my rdp file is listed below.  Any addition suggestions would be most welcome.

    Regards
    Paul
