    Hello all,

I am able to remote to a server while I am in the office on my laptop; however, if I try to remote from home on VPN I get the below error:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

    1) Remote access to the server is not enabled

2)The remote computer is turned off

3)The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

I used the below article but it did not resolve my issue:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/thread/5c8acf84-a44f-4d8e-a8e0-b9db323144bc/

This was working all day and I did not make any changes to the server before this issues occurred.  Does anyone have any other ideas that I can try to resolve this issue?

    Note:

The firewall on the machine was turned off for testing.

When I am logged in through VPN I can not ping the server.

Can you ping the server by server IP address? If yes, this could be DNS issue.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I can only ping by the fully qualified name and IP address when I am on the network.  When I use VPN the fully qualified name and IP address both fail giving a time out error.

Please make sure both VPN server LAN and VPN client LAN are not in the same IP range. Posting the results of ipconfig /all on both server and client may help.

They are not.  This affects two different groups living in different states who can not connect to this server via VPN.

Another thing I tried was to start in Safe Mode to disable apps and tried to remote that way to see if any apps were causing the problem.  I read this from a blog that resolved another admins issue.

OK, in this case, use tracert command to find out where the traffic stop. Or can you telnet port 3389 with VPN connection?

Telnet fails but the tracert fails on the second hop.

    Hi,

Please verify that the VPN connection was established correctly. After the VPN connected, we need to verify we can communicate with the server. Try to ping or telnet 3389 port with internal IP address. It sounds more likely a VPN issue.

Then check the second hop security settings or firewall.
